Hiking in the mountains around Brienz
by globetrott
Brienz and its surrounding mountains are simply great for hikes. Brienzer Rothorn is a perfect place to start hiking to Soerenberg - at the other side of the Rothorn, or you step down again to Brienz - walking-time will be around 5-6 hours and you will pass by plenty of great places, that you will never see when taking the steam-train. Good walking-shoes and weather-proof clothings, because the weather might change fast and quickly in the mountains and shelterhuts are not to be found everywhere.

I was wondering why you could buy a two day ticket....
As the day went on I realized why. This place is HUGE!
13 areas of architectual buildings are represented: Jura, Central Midlands, Bernese Midlands, Ticino,Valais, etc.. A whole day would probably not be enough to see this place. We spent half-a-day here and barely scratched the surface.
You can get a discount if you have a Swiss Rail Pass-whip it out- if you've got one!
Very detailed guides in many languages are available. You can also request a guided tour in German, French, Italian, or English, but you have to book in advance.
A Hands-On Museum
by Rhondaj
Children won't get bored going from building to building, because many have hands-on activities. Here, Jenna is talked into trying on a dress-up outfit. (don't tell her it's posted on the internet ; )
Some of the other things: wood chipping, wood grinding, shadow puppets, weaving, and much more!
Eating
by Rhondaj
There are a few eating options:
You can picnic. Places are available with grills and wood is provided. Nice!
The Alter Baeren Restaurant- Bernese Midland area- daily menu and self-service snacks.
The Degan- Central Switzerland area- Swiss specialties and snacks
We ate at a brand new spot in the Ticino region- don't know the name of it- Construction was still going on in the area.
