Hiking paths
by sswagner
Trails and walkways are well marked in Switzerland. The arrows will point out the way to go, and a general time required to make the trip is given. I found these to be accurate. Of course, allow for photo stops, rest stops, eating your lunch, and exploring in general. Trails are in very good condition. There will be a little mud in some places as the snow melts, but I found the trails to be well maintained. In my opinion, these are some of the best walking trails I have encountered so far. The views from the trail, the peace and quiet, and even the good exercise.

Grindelwald is a small village with many hotels and shops catering to the tourists, yet even though land is at a premium, there is some agricultural activity in the summer time.
The paths at the east end of the village lead through farm land and and the two interests, those of farming and tourism ,exist side by side.

Kummerly+Frey publish a series of hiking books in English and German. One of those is the Jungfrau-Region. They are small, yellow books and you can find them in most shops around the Jungfrau region. I have not yet found an internet site that sells direct.
My favourite hikes? This is just one list:
1. Kleine Sheidegg - Wengen
2. Wengen - Lauterbrunnen
3. Grindelwald wild flower meadows in June
4. Lauterbrunnen - Stechelberg
5. Mannlichen - Grindelwald
Inside the mountain.

Th swiss engineers are to be congratulated for building a rail line inside the mountain.
I have searched enlarged photos of the face of the Eiger for the windows at the first station that allows one to look out over the valley. Alas no windows are visible.
I have not looked for the many ways up the mountain that climbers have used. I only know many died in the process.
books have been written and Movies made yet there is nothing as impressive as standing near the Eiger and viewing the rock face.
Hiking on First
by sandysmith
The main Gondola in Grindelwald takes you up to the hiking region of First...endless hiking opportunities up here for all levels. Easy walks are to the popular reflecting pool of the Bachalpsee with its alpine panorama and to the Grosse Scheidegg in the other direction.....as in this pic. Here you get wonderful views of the Grindelwald glaciers.
