hi there can anyone give me some advice on walks in and around interlaken preferably taking in some mountain scenery. What is the best map system to use and what will the weather be like. Are these hikes suitable for the middle of May. many thanks for any help
Twiggy, of you want to get many replies, you better introduce yourself by filliung in the VT member home page (We all like to know more about the people in this forum, your origin, travel experience etc.).
As for Grindelwald scenic walks, you find lots of information on the web (Google etc). The Grindelwald tourist office would certainly be glad to send you some documentation.

If you want your own Sound of Music experience stay in Grindelwald, Switzerland and spend a day mountain walking in the Alps.
There is a gondola lift in town that makes two stops before it reaches its highest point of First. We were there in May and there was too much snow at the top so we took the lift up to the stop just below (Schreckfeld-over 6,000 ft.). The view is incredibly beautiful! With the snow covered peaks as a backdrop to the fields and pastures covered with new green grass and filled with yellow dandelions and crocus flowers, you can't help but think you're part of the VonTrapp family.
The walk downhill is of course easier than up but still hard on the legs! There are walking/hiking maps and path signs to help, but...it's also easy to get off the path as we found out! No problem though. The hillsides are dotted with chalets all connected with winding roads that lead down to the valley below and back to Grindelwald.
There are restaurants at each gondola stop, but take a daypack with lunch (and plenty of water), and picnic next to a babbling brook just above the Bort gondola stop. Wear good walking shoes and be careful walking downhill on gravel paths.
Yes the camera still worked and the ultimate shot from the observation tower was to the top of the Jungfrau.
then I retreated to a lower level, the level where the dog sleds were and the entrance to the train station.
This place has several (pretty challenging hikes) including one to the peak of Schartzhorn. It is located at 2000 m (1000 m above the city) and has great views of the area (if there is good weather). Be careful since it may be decent weather in Grindelwald, yet foggy and rainy on Frist (look from below to see if the mountain is covered with fog). To get there take the gondola (30 CHF one way, 50 CHF round-trip).
I was a bit disappointed about not being able to go on the Mumeltierwag (the Marmot trail between First and Grosse Scheidegg) as it was still closed when we were there - still a bit of snow on the ground. You're supposed to be able to spot all sorts of wildlife.
In any case, later in the summer, they do organise guided walks starting from Grosse Scheidegg towards the Schwarzhorn. I am definitely signing up for that one the next time I'm there.
