Re: Great Grindelwald

Most likely there will be no snow in the village (You might have to go up to Jungfraujoch to see any snow) Männlichenbahn will be closed in May (closed from 13.April 2008 till 31.05.08) as it is between winter and summer season.

Travel Tips for Grindelwald

Eiger Tales & more

by Bigs

I think it´s the fact that you are so close to the mountains in this valley....

And especially the Eiger with its famous northface and its history of mountaineering keeping me coming back every time......... My fondest memory is for sure my VT Meeting with Elisabeth (Rebibi). We did hike up to the Glecksteinhuette in July 2002 and it was just a perfect day......

Skitouring

by seratonin

Apart from the cable cars in and around Grindelwald (there is a plenty of them...), you can also go up to the mountains by yourself.
There are several possibilities for ascents, most of them in the Jungfrau region. There they all have a very alpine character, as the summits are more or less all above 3500 meters.
The pic was taken on the Eiger mountain, a very rough ski trip comming from the station "Eigergletscher" of the Jungfraujoch train over the rude Eigergletscher.

Grindelwald-Grund

by globetrott

Grindelwald-Grund is down in the valley of Luetschine, and with a height of 943 meters it is almost 100 meters lower than the much more famous centre of Grindelwald. All trains to Kleine Scheidegg will go through Grindelwald-Grund, where you may also change to the cablecar taking you up to Maennlichen - 2227 meters above sea-level.
Grindelwald-Grund has a lot less sunshine than Grindelwald, but the hotels are also a bit cheaper than in Grindelwald !!

Schynige Platte-train

by globetrott

The train to Schynige Platte starts in Wilderswil - close to Interlaken - BUT I will list it here anyway, because you might need it in order to prepare your hikes between Schynige Platte and First, which I considder beeing one of the most scenic hiking-paths in that area.
Schynige Platte is in a height of 1967 meters above sea-level and offers various attractions like
1)Teddyland - an attaraction for the whole family
2)the Alpengarten with 500 different alpine flowers
3)the Schynige Platte-restaurant and alpine-hotel:
Hotel Schynige Platte, CH-3800 Interlaken
Tel. +41 (0)33 822 34 31, Fax +41 (0)33 822 34 56
www.schynigeplatte.ch
The train to Schynige Platte dates back to the year 1893 and was electrified in 1914.
The track of the cog-wheel-train is 7500 meters long and the difference in height is more than 1400 meters.
The train runs ONLY IN SUMMER:
between may 27th and October 15th in 2006
for other years please check at the link below !
The last train is leaving Schynige Platte at 06.00p.m. !
The ordinary return-ticket is 52 sfr from Wilderswil
It is included in the "Regionalpass Berner Oberland"
and in the Jungfraubahnen-Pass

An everything-meter

by sierralyndon

On the main road (and there's only one in Grindelwald) you will find this "everything gauge". Everything was in German so I could only guess that it told the temperature, air pressure, humidity, etc.
