From Bern to Grindelwald

by terttusinikka

I'm Terttu from Finland and I'm going to travel to Bern and then continue to Grindelwald. Could someone give some advice about the best way to get there. Thank you very much in advance.

I did the opposite by train and it was fantatic. The trains are efficient and clean and a great, fast way to travel. You can get a train from Bern to Interlaken and then get another train from there to Grindelwald.

Make you sure you do the trip to the top of Jungfraujoch...and enjoy it!

yes, indeed, you will find it very easy to get there by train. About 1 hour and a half Bern to Interlaken, maybe less. And a short trip to Grindelwald. (sit on the left side of the train for beautiful lake views)

Yes definitely by train. I have made this trip twice and it is awesome.

As mentioned in the previous post, the lakes are fantastic.
You will change train in Interlaken, it is an easy process.

Have a great time!

Of course by train.
Trip to Jungfraujoch is a must but if you are there for a number of days, wait for a clear day and of course if you are on a budget get the early train for a discount.
Enjoy it Grindelwald is my No 1 destination

Travel Tips for Grindelwald

Saumerwegg - mamot spotting

by sandysmith

The path leading up from the Bachalpsee is called the Saumerwegg (a path of national significance) It continues behind the lake and up in the direction of the Burgi mountain hut to Gassenboden. This a great place to spot the marmots or though you will probably hear them first!

Reach the Jungfraujoch by train.

by dabidc

The visit to the observation tower on the Jungfraujoch is not a journey many people will ever complete by climbing the face of the mountain since it is 3450 m above sea level.

This journey is unconventional since it uses a rail system that climbs the mountain inside the Eiger.

The best time to start is early morning and I chose the first train from Grindelwald to Kleine Scheidegg which leaves at 8.00am

Aletschglacier-Hike - 2 days off the beaten path

by globetrott

An Aletschglacier-Hike might be the ultimate experience during your vacation in Switzerland :
You will start in Interlaken the first day and will go up and explore Jungfraujoch, before you will take a 4-hour hike to Konkordiaplatz, where you will have a short rest and picknick before you will cross a small montain-river and step up to Konkordiahuette in a height of 2850 meters above sea-level.There you will be served Cheese-fondue and spend the night in a simple dormitory. The next day you will start again after a rich breakfast-buffet, passing by impressive crevasses and a great mountain-scenery. The hike will end at Kuehboden, where you take down the cablecar and go home via Fiesch - Brig - Spiez to Interlaken.
From Jungfraujoch you may see just half of the Grosser Aletsch-gletscher.Konkordia-Huette is at about the end of the glacier that you may see on my picture, close to that mountain that looks like a pyramid.Enlarge my pics and get an idea about the distances !
Anyone is able to do this hike, when beeing able to walk 4-6 hours a day.
The price is 380 sfr ( 315 sfr if you have a half-tax-billet or similar)
and it includes the guiding, all transports, accomodation, dinner&breakfast
These tours are available between july and october
every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday !!
Make a reservation in advance - see the webpage below !
NEVER do such a walk without a local guide !!!

Kleine Scheidegg

by sswagner

For many people, this is a stop on the way to the Jungfraujoch. You get off one train, go by the shops and eateries, and then get on another train. I highly recommend taking some time to explore this area. Some of the regions best hiking trails begin and end here. I chose to take the trail all of the way back down to Grindelwald. In June, very few people were on the trail. The weather was nice, mountains were visible, and wildflowers were everywhere. This was a great place to walk, take photos, and eat lunch somewhere on the trail. Kleine Scheidegg itself is above the timberline, so there is an unobstructed view of the high peaks of the Eiger, Monch, and the Jungfrau. The trails will lead to forested regions, mountain meadows, and one even skirts the area just below the Eiger's north wall. This region is full of classic hikes. Signs will lead to the various paths and give the hikers an idea of how long the hike will be. Many people save the Kleine Scheidegg visit for the afternoon after returning from the Jungfraujoch. I concur that this is a good idea.

Oberer Glacier

by sandysmith

The Oberer glacier of Grindelwald can be reached and its crevases admired from close range by climbing a series of steep, narrow ladders.......be warned very little passing places!....not for the faint-hearted or if you suffer from vertigo. If you make it to the top there is a very expensive glacier bar!! It costs SFr 6 for the privilege of this climb too.
