local tour operator in Grindelwald

by theresachan

I will be spending a week in Grindelwald end of Jan 2009. I want to ski and explore the nearby area. Are there any local tour operators that offer day trips etc?

Grindlewald Sports offers ski tourism off-piste, and mountaineering: http://www2.grindelwaldsports.ch/cms/front_content.php (only German sorry).

There is these folk: http://www.mountainhostel.ch/e/activities_3.htm

As far as finding a tour company to take you on standard trips up trains or the like, I don't know of any. You may find something when you get there... however trips like Jungfrau and Schilthorn are very easy to do alone.

I hope I have been on the right track with my answer.

Travel Tips for Grindelwald

The Livestock

by sswagner

There will come a moment when one is walking in Grindelwald or on a hiking trail and suddenly hear the sound of bells. These means cattle or sheep are in close proximity. I even noticed that some bells ringing together seemed to produce chords. If you can get three cows together with three different bells, you can get a chord produced as they move around. Needless to say, the dairy industry is very important here. That chocolate and cheese has to come from somewhere. The cattle are very accustomed to human traffic, and many will approach you or look at you out of curiosity. Perhaps they are even hoping for a handout of some kind. The sound of the bells.

Bort - at halfway to First

by globetrott

Bort is the middle-station of the First cablecar in a height of 1570 meters above sea-level. Around of the station of Bort you will find some restaurants and a few cheap mountain-hotels. You will not have to leave the cabin, BUT you may do so and go down the rest of the hill with so-called "Trotti-bikes" (scooters) at a great system of asphalted mountain-roads. Bort is also a place, where you may start to walk to Hotel Wetterhorn, where you may take the bus to Grosse Scheidegg.
Helmets are compulsory, when renting such a scooter - you may rent them togeather with the "Trotti-bike"

Jungfraubahnen-Pass

by globetrott

It will depend on the duration of your vacation and of course also on a good weather-forecast and it might make sense to buy this special ticket :
Jungfraubahnen-pass is a special pre-paid train-ticket for 6 consecutive days and it is valid for the whole area between Interlaken Ost and Grosse Scheidegg, Kleine Scheidegg,Maennlichen, Wengen,Muerren,First,Gridelwald, Busalp, Harder Kulm and Schynigge Platte.
You may use all of these trains and buses for free for 6 days, only for the train between Kleine Scheidegg and Jungfraujoch you pay 50 sfr extra.
For the Schilthorn you have to pay the full price !! - In case that you intend to go to Schilthorn and/or Brienzer Rothorn as well , I may recommend to buy the "Regionalpass Berner Oberland" instead of Jungfraubahnen-Pass !!
Read more about it in my next transportation-tip !!

The Jungfraubahnen-pass is 190 sfr for the 6 consecutive days !

Schwarzhorn

by leplaya

A 2930 m peak across the valley from the big mountains of the Jungfrau region. There is a trail from First that leads to the peak. For the most part it isn’t too difficult, but the snowy regions at the end are pretty demanding. To get to the top you really need good weather. Unfortunately for me, it was raining and I didn’t make it too far past the snow line.
