traveling from Grindelwald to Germany
by lajohnst
We will be staying in Grindelwald the week prior to Christmas and are looking for a good place to go for Christmas and New Years. I have heard New Years is great in Germany. Perhaps Munich? We are having difficulty figuring out how to get there (train or plane and which ones) as well as deciding where to go. Any suggestions or advise will be greatly appreciated.

Considering the time of year and the scenery...my vote is TRAIN.

How do you wish to spend the time ? Are you looking for scenery, or nightlife, do you want to go on day trips, or have a lot of quiet time, do you want to be in a large city, or somewhat isolated ? You might look at the German travel forums and travel pages here on VT.

Go to www.sbb.ch for train timetables.
Don't forget however that from Grindelwald to the closest point in Germany will take you at least three hours by any means of transportation.

Munich is a bit far. I'd go for Freiburg, a lively university town close to Switzerland (and France for that matter).
Travel Tips for Grindelwald
Gleckstein Hut
by Manara
It is little known that Winston Churchill came to Grindelwald and climbed the Wetterhorn in his youth. He did it at the age of 19, together with three guides. Before the enterprise he spent the night in the Gleckstein Hut, which at that time was a small and spartan shelter where 10 people could sleep. The Gleckstein Hut nowadays is a bigger establishment with more than 100 beds, but it remains the starting point for those who climb this mountain.
This hut, at an altitude of 2317 metres, is also the goal of one of the hiking paths near Grindelwald. The track starts from Grosse Scheidegg and has a spectacular view of the glacier, but it is not an easy hike: there are small waterfalls to cross, and drops down to the glacier.

Final stop.
by dabidc
It is surprising to see a station inside a mountain and to realise that it is at about 3200 m .
More amazing things are to be discovered, a cafeteria / reastaurant with views over the terrain to the north.
A chamber of ice sculptures and yes the outside world in dazzling white snow.
Like all the other folks up there it was a time for photos and since the day was clear as crystal, the views were into Germany and France as well as the parts of Switzerland north of the Bernese Oberland.
Sledging! - (Winter only)
by NateWill22
If you are in Grindelwald in the winter like I was, you simply MUST go sledging! This is like sledding as a kid times 100! Extreme sledding! You each get your own "sledge" and zip down the slopes! I suggest doing the run on the Faulhorn. It is the longest sledge run in Europe! 15km from the peak of the Faulhorn, or a little less from Bussalp, where the bus drops you off. (Faulhorn summit is an extra 3 hour hike I have heard.) I sledged from Bussalp and it was fantastic! Here's one of my favorite Switzerland pictures of my mom sledging down from Bussalp! I love the way the sun shines over the mountains like that!
(Jump to my Switzerland page and check out the sledging travelogue for more pics and stuff!)
