Just how good are the facilities for hang gliding in and around Grindelwald? I have just returned from there and understand you can get a short-packed hang glider up to the top of the 'First' cable car station but how about access on the mountain railways and roads ? I am a member of a UK hang gliding club and am exploring the possibilities of arranging a club holiday there in the future,

If you only have time for one short hike in Grindelwald then take the First Gondola and hike the short distance to the Bachalpsee (just over 1 hour). You won't be disappointed with the alpine view and if its a clear calm day you will have a lovely reflection in the lake.
Also look out (or listen out!) for the marmots there.
From Grindelwald you can Hike up to Pfingstegg at 1400 metres which gives fine views of the Village and the whole Valley.
It is possible then to Hike around to the new Stieregg Hut in the Unterer Grindelwaldgletscher, when I explored this valley the Path was closed until the new hut was completed, but I explored the path.
You need a head for heights as the vertical drops are awesome. The hike takes about 2 hours for the return journey and is quite breathtaking.
The original hut was destroyed in a Massive landslide which hit recently.
Well my knowledge of geography would suggest that this view shows the dark area in the foreground as being Grindelwald and the narrow valley into and out of the Village.
The dark area in the middle distance is the valley where Lake Brienz is and then onwards to the north beyond the Lake.
The other snow covered area is possibly south and west of Luzern.
Skiing close to the impressive Eiger, Mönch & Jungfrau will offer an unique opportunity to feel the alpine athmosphere. From Grindelwald to access the skiing area top you will have the choice between the cogwheel railway to the Kleine Scheidegg Railway Station (2'061m) a 30min ride or the red gondola Grindelwald Grund - Männlichen.
The slopes are steeper around the Lauberhorn area, if you are looking for more smooth and gentle slopes head to the Männlichen area. On the way enjoy the modern 6-seater chairlift Honegg to access to well grommed slopes for a perfect carving session.
There is a choice of hikes from First, one as stated goes back down to Grindelwald.
Another heads off to the east and after a greater distance does get you back to your hotel in Grindelwald.
Yet a third starts to climb to the top of the Faulhorn mountain.
If you follow this one and have lots of time and you are a good trekker or hiker, it will take you to the west and on to a rail connection at the exit from the Grindelwald valley.
