One of my favorite memories of Europe...the best location...the coolest staff...and one of the most beautiful places in the world. If you take a backpacking trip across Europe..you cannot miss this place!

Balmer's is heaven for a young traveler looking to see one of the most beautiful places in the world, experience the outdoors, and have a great time. The beds were clean, the drinks were cold, and there was a market down the street that allowed us to utilize the kitchen. I am yet to stay in a hostel more appealing.
Unique Quality: It has an outdoor area with lots of activities and an amazing views. An outside bar with a half off happy hour and a decent burger. The bar kicks off at night, it has a lot of potential but really relies on the people that fill it. If fun people are there you will have a good time, if not do your best to be those people.

This place was incredible. If you go to Interlaken and are looking for a good time, stay here - you won't regret it. Very clean and social, Balmers has a BBQ, bars, a dance club, and organized excursions. I can't wait to go back.

Wow. What a place. Yes, it's been ages since we stayed here... The location was great. And it was quite cheap for Switzerland.

On my first visit to Interlaken, I stayed at Balmers with 3 other friends. We were able to get our own, private 4 bed room, which is the way to go, if you can. After two of those friends left, me and Grant stayed in the 6 person dorm room. Both instances provided a great night sleep, with super beds, and big, warm down comforters. Man, is that the only way to go in Switzerland. The hostel itself is a rustic-type group of buildings, with exposed wooden beams, and fireplaces in the main lodge. Breakfast is included and they have great, cheap dinners available. The sitting areas are a great place to hang out and visit, and they show DVD movies around 5-7 PM. For the night owls, they have their own bar underneath the hostel, called the Metro. It is a fine place to have a night out, and they televise sporting events form all over the world. They have been doing it for over 50 years, and it shows.

We stayed at the Balmers Herberg in Interlaken - it was fantastic as we were almost the only ones there...
(I have been told during the peak season it's pretty crappy staying at Balmers...as we were there in mid October it wasn't very busy at all - unless you want to party all night long don't stay there during the peak season)
We paid 34 CHF for a double room without an en-suite but including breakfast...
Unique Quality: They have a good set up and everyone spoke English (after seven weeks of other languages it was nice to hear some English). The hostel was filled with 99% Aussies, Canadians and Americans but it was okay for a couple of nights. The price was okay and they had free games - fussball, table tennis etc. The lounges are cozy too!!

Cheap but a lot of fun to this day. Young people gather from around the world and share adventures. Great place for young people traveling through Europe.
17 Euro??? HATED THE LOCKOUT!
They sort of packed people in like sardines, but the beds were comfy. The showers were dorm style.
Very swiss looking hostel though...
Can anybody advise a budget hotel around Interlaken (on the road or on the mountains rather than the city center)? I plan to use it as a base to avoid the city center so that I can visit the towns around Interlaken.

But interlaken is not very busy with traffic, so in my opinion it does not change too much if you stay in or around interlaken.
most budget places are in interlaken/matten (balmers herberge, funny farm, packpackers villa, happy inn ....) some are arround like the youth hostel in bönigen. a great place to stay are also the cabins at the "TCS camping" close to the East Trainstation.
