the charm of interlaken
by call_me_rhia
Interlaken is a well-known summer and winter holiday resort in Central Switzerland squeezed between two lakes of emerald green colour (in fact Interlaken means between lakes - in this case the lake of thun and of brienz). A website I shall not name describes it as having "the ambience of a small town atmosphere with big city sophistication". The latter, I'm afriad to say, is a badly-made up lie After having got over the shock of seeing people parading around in horse-drawn carriages, and after having left the truly horrible, touristy and tacky Banhofstrasse (the main street), I found some charm in th backlanes: basically how interlaken would look like if there was no tourism: little shops, tiny restaurants serving local specialities (and not only fondue), quiet parks by the lake, hundreds of ducks.
Upon reacing Lauterbrunnen

Upon reacing Lauterbrunnen, join the other tourists & take a short bus ride to WENGEN: another car-free chalet-style ski resort. I love Wengen, the shops sell very nice crafts & the people there are very friendly, wondering where I'm from & why a nice girl like me was traveling by myself, hahaha..... The view from this village is exceptionally breathtaking. Even more beautiful than Murren, this village is very nice to stroll in...
Bollywood in Interlaken
by Ekaterinburg
On Donna in India's VT page, she mentioned the high numbers of Indian visitors to Interlaken because it's used a lot as a setting in Bollywood movies. Before I ever reached Interlaken I had clear evidence of this as a huge commotion marked the train's stop at Bern. An Indian family of several generations, boarded the train for Interlaken and I have never in my life seen so much luggage. This was reminiscent of the Grand Tour of Europe that people used to indulge in before securty and baggage restrictions got in the way. You probably think I'm exaggerating but have a look at the photo. In addition to what they brought to their seats, ALL this luggage stacked at the end of the carriage, belonged to this family. Fancy bringing that on a Ryan Air Flight ?
Walk Smartly

Normal size backpack really helps because you need to use both hands on your walking/hiking sticks. leave your fashionable and expensive shoes at the hotel/hostel and take walking shoes instead or better still hiking shoes or else you might get blisters and corns from walking. Take warm clothes with you.Walking inside the tunnel can be a bit chilly at 3454m above sea level. Brings loads of film if you use film camera and extra memory card if you use digital. They do sell the films but you know, it's expensive.
What Do You Want To Try Next?
by riorich55
As this picture shows, if you can think it you can do it. For the adventurous there are a wide range of activities you can try in the Interlaken region. We only had time and the money to try one - Tandem Paragliding. Maybe we should try Zorbing next. Hey, I don't see Trotti biking on this menu.
