Interlaken or Lauterbrunnen

by duxton

My partner and I are travelling from Zermatt to Interlaken for one night to catch the train the next morning to Jungfraugh. My question is , we will be arriving around 5.00pm, should we head straight through to Lauterbrunnen and catch the train from there in the morning?

I'd prefer an evening in Lauterbrunnen to one in Interlaken. Better still though, you could go on the Wengen. Last train up is well into the evening. You change at Lauterbrunnen and it gives you a slightly later start next day on your way to the Jungfraugh.

While Interlaken is very nice, it's still more of a "city" than Lauterbrunnen which to me is a wonderful, walkable mountain village. As suggested Wengen is higher up the Jungfrau and is also a walkable mountain village. I prefer Lauterbrunnen for the waterfall views. The scenery going up the mountain in the morning will be worth the extra travel the night before.

The following web sites provide a wealth of information about the area.

Lauterbrunnen is magical. There is a reason why Tolkien modeled Rivendell, home of the elves, after Lauterbrunnen Valley.

Travel Tips for Interlaken

The taxpayer's reward

by Manara

Visitors staying in Interlaken, whether in hotels, pensions, hostels or campings, must pay a visitor's tax that is added to the bill. However, they receive something: the Visitor's Card, that is given them at the beginning of their stay. In July and August this card entitles visitors to use the local buses free of charge.
The area where the card is valid is limited, but not too small. It goes from Manorfarm (its western end) to Iseltwald and to Saxeten, including also Bonigen and Wilderswild. It is very useful for those who stay at the camping sites, which are a bit out of town, because it allows them to go downtown at no charge.
The Visitor's Card entitles also to some discounts al local attractions. They are ll listed in a leaflet you receive with your card.

Beautiful Morning Sunrise

by NateWill22

As the sun rose from the West each morning, it shone beautiful pink rays on the mountains to the East. It was gorgeous! Unfortunately.... the picture is not so gorgeous. Since my scanner is broken, and this picture was from a disposable camera, I tried taking a picture of the picture with my digital camera... and this is the result. So maybe it would be better to imagine your own picture of beautiful pink, snow-capped mountains, rather than looking at this!

For all fans of Sherlok Holmes

For all fans of Sherlok Holmes

25 km east of Interlaken - in Meiringen - there are lots of special activities for Sherlock-Holmes-Fans :
Every year there are several "pilgrimages" of Sherlock-Holmes-societies from places all over the world and they come to Meiringen in their costumes, visiting all the important places in that area.
See the pics, that I saw in a window at the station of Reichbachfall-funicular.
In Hotel du Sauvage you may attend a 4-course-menu and have to solve a murder-mystery togeather with other guests and some actors.
Learn more about Sherlock Holmes at :

and you may click here in order to see another Sherlock Holmes museum in Switzerland, close to Geneve

the eiger trail

by call_me_rhia

It's a "new-ish" hiking trail that from the kleine scheidegg train station half way up the jungraujoch, takes you down to Grindelwald - passing en route under the glorious Eiger North Wall. Admittedly I had just started the hike when my cell phone rang and had to head down into Interlaken quickly to meet a VTer - but I had a little taste of it, and look like a spectacular hike hiking boots - obviously - and some water. This can be bought at the Kleine Scheidegg.
