The Ruchenbuhl: House with a fantastic view
The Ruchenbuhl holiday home is a house with 3 apartments, each with a private entrance. The upper floor is 1 apartement and the bottom floor has a studio and another apartment. The best thing about this place was the stunning view of Lake Thun (Thunersee) and the surrounding mountains.
It was a wonderful typical Swiss house on top of a hill with a view over Lake Thun and the mountains. We met with the owners and she showed us our “apartment” as they call it. We had a full equipped kitchen, 3 bedrooms, a bathroom with jetted tub and a shower, a sitting/dining room and living room with satellite TV all to ourselves. On top of that we had 2 beautiful balconies overlooking the lake and mountains. In the backyard there was a patio, a stone bbq, a games room and a swimming pool all for us to use as well. Well, we were impressed and I was happy that I found such a beautiful place with wonderful owners!
Great owners that were very helpful and friendly. The views are stunning and everything you needed was right there. There was a beautiful back yard with patio furniture, a bbq and a swimming pool.

Hotel Seeburg: Great view, disappointing accommodation
The location for Hotel Seeburg is ideal. Granted it is out of the city but it is right on the lake. The restaurant is quite reasonable and you can dine at tables set on the very edge of the lake. The reason why I would not stay here again is the standard of accommodation. Our room had a prefabricated ensuite which was small but tolerable but the problem was the room itself. Hugely disappointing. The carpet was old and threadbare and contributed to the overall mustiness of the room. The furniture is pure 70s, laminated and not particularly well maintained. The view from the room is breath-taking but so is the smell from inside the room. Far too expensive for this standard of accommodation, a pretty view will only go so far when the stale smell of the room is all pervading. Breakfast was very basic but an annoying aspect of breakfast is that they have assigned tables to your room. So, no matter if there are tables vacant with a more pleasant position the owners will not let you sit there as that is not the way they do things.

Hotel-Brienzersee: A quiet stay on a beautiful blue lake
This is not a hotel for princesses, more like a hotel for budget minded people who are looking for a good veiw. It was cheaper to stay here in Ringgenberg, which is only a three minute train ride to Interlaken Ost and it is on the most beautiful lake I have ever seen. Interlaken is definately not as beautiful! The service was good and the breakfast was outstanding. A typical Swiss breakfast with bread (in many forms) cereal yogurt, boiled egg, meats, cheeses, coffee, tea, nutella and jams and it was a buffet. I stuffed my face every morning before hiking and was happy to do so. The shower had no light in it and the water pressure was lacking. The bed was so hard that I woke up with a sore shoulder from sleeping on my side. Having said this I will admit to sharing a likeness with the Princess and the Pea as finding comfy beds are difficult for me to find. It is well worth it to get a view of the lake but if you cannot afford that the mountains behind are lovely too.
Lake Brienzersee is the most beautiful lake I have ever seen. It is a color blue that I thought was reserved only for tropical paradises. It's insane! The town of Ringgenberg is a sleepy town and we joked of having the place all to ourselves. There is a room available with a lake view with a Smart car for 200 swiss franks...Well worth the money in my opinion.

Grandhotel Giessbach: a great hotel closeby Interlaken
Grandhotel Giessbach is one of the most romantic hotels , you may find in Switzerland : It was built in 1855 high above Brienzersee - opposite of Brienz and next to a scenic waterfall. The best time for the hotel was between 1870 and 1914 but afterwards tourism changed a lot and it was hard to fill such a remote hotel.
In 1985 it was restored and it looks really great again from inside !! In Grandhotel Giessbach you may still breath the good old times, that seem to have stood still for ages there... Click on my picture in order to see the great details of architecture - I also have a seperate page about Giessbach, the waterfalls, the cable-car, the hotel & surroundings!
You may get to Giessbach :
1)on the road from Brienz - BUT it is quite narrow and might be dangerous at certain times, because only at a few places it is possible to pass by other cars, and it might be good to avoid the times, when the public bus goes to Axalp.
2)By ship - the elegant, traditional way, most of the tourists came that way in the good old times of the hotel. Each and every ship on Brienzersee stops there !!

Hotel Gloria - Beatenberg: In Interlaken with a car?
If you have a car in Interlaken and you want to escape the crowds, consider heading north and uphill from the Interlaken West train station. Follow signs to our favorite place to stay in the area, the sunny shelf town of Beatenberg. You will have wonderful views of the lakes below and the mountains too and best of all you can escape the bussed-in hordes. (Even if you don't have a car, the postbus runs every half-hour.) And the best place to stay if you are looking for quiet and superb, homey service is the Hotel Gloria. They took us in and treated us like very special quests, despite our not having a reservation and without question I will stay here every time in the future. Web site is www.hotelgloria.ch. Feel free to e-mail me if you have questions.
The view is the best I've seen in the area. The panorama sweeps from Schynige Platte, past the Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau, and on to the Niessen. And the service is simply superb. They treat every guest with genuine affection and they do not take tourist busses, so you are never overrun. And it's QUIET!

Zobrist's House: Private accomodation
We had a great experience here. In the month of August there are many activities in village. Though located in Goldswil, it is only 15 minutes by foot from Interlaken East Railway station. An ideal place to relax at the bank of the river Aare. Two bedrooms, salon, kitchen and a glassed terrace.
Beautiful garden space, outside terrace with grill and great views . Either you'll enjoy watching the boat cruises passing throught the river to the lake of Brienz or acquire some fishing license and start throwing baits for dinner.

Interlaken's Premier Hostel
This hostel is a completely different vibe from the Funny Farm. While the Funny Farm is more of a weed smoking, adrenaline junkie, hippy crowd...Balmer's is a beer drinking, prepped up frat party style crowd. Still Balmer's can be a s wild and crazy as Funny Farm on any night. However, only guests are allowed to party there, it's a little more VIP. Known as the Metro Bar, the bar located in the basement of Balmers is the number one bar in Interlaken. A great place to drink a beer and meet girls. The showers here are hot and so are the girls. If at all possible stay in the 40 person room, it's a gauranteed good time. The one thing to remember is that there is a 9 o'clock morning lock out, where everyone has to be out of the hostel by 9 and can't return until 3 in the afternoon.
The hostel is in great condition and the free breakfast in the morning isn't half bad. The thing that could make or break the decision between Balmers and Funny Farm is the hot showers. Heck why not do what I did and stay at both?

Interlaken's Wildest Hostel
A mix between a hippie community and Mt. Everest base camp, this hostel is a wild place to stay. Aside from the marijuana plants that line the garden, Guiness Beer tent in the back yard, huge pool with a climbing wall and snow covered alps in every direction, the Funny Farm is one of the best known and most sought after hostels to stay at, in Europe. Its a great place to relax, as the whole vibe is a mix of excitement and relaxation. There is no lock out time, and you can sleep un bothered until the sun goes down. The funny thing is, is that most guests spend as little time as possible here. Why? With an extreme list of bungy jumping, skydiving, canyoning, rafting, hang gliding, paragliding and heli-sking to name a few, Interlaken is the extreme sports capital of the world.
Before staying here, know that it is extreme in every way possible. The rooms are great and range anywhere from eight person rooms and up. Get drunk or wait until right after you jump out of an airplane to take a shower, as the water is ice cold and sucked the air from my lungs in seconds. Still, I couldnt help but smile as I looked out the bathroom window to see bud plants everywhere. The staff here is great and everyone staying and working here is always coming back from an extreme activity. Plus there is no need to go out and find a party at night, since the Funny Farm is the biggest party in Interlaken. It's perfect!

Balmers or Funny Farm are the...
Balmers or Funny Farm are the choice hostels. I chose Balmers and anybody who has been there knows what I mean when I say 'This place rocks'. There's a bar/dance club downstairs, terrace with lounge chairs, a gian chess board, information on sporting activities, and good meals. One of the most important things is it's clean.
Fresh water from glaciers only a few miles up stream is coming out of a metal pipe at the front door. You can drink it and it rivals any bottled water you've ever tasted. Stock up, too, you don't know when you'll see free water again.
