Basel to Interlaken

by bbolts

Hi experts,

I need to train from Basel to Interlaken, I have an night at the inexpensive Hotel Beatus. I have a bit of trouble understanding the train schedules. I have the Europass.
And when I get there, is there a tram or can I possible walk? I'll be lugging bags.
Thanks!

You can find Swiss train times, details and fares in English here:

http://www.sbb.ch/en/

The hotel is not actually in Interlaken itself, I'm afraid. It is 5km away:

I believe (from reviews here: http://www.booking.com/hotel/ch/beatus.en.html ) that you can get a bus from Interlaken Ost railway station.

You say you have trouble understanding the train schedule, if you tell us what is not clear we may try to help. Anyway, trains from Basel to Interlaken are frequent, at least one every hour is direct, i.e. not requiring any change.
About getting to your hotel, is in the village of Sundlaunen, by the lake Thun.
Trains from Basel make a first stop at the West station, and for you it is more convenient to get off the train there, because your destination is west of Interlaken.
The bus to take to go to Sundlaunen is the line 21, direction Thun. These buses stop just outside the station, and they have the name of their final destination written on the front. It takes 10 minutes to get to Sundlaunen. Currently there is a bus every 30 minutes, but this is the summer timetable, after October 23 there will be just one every hour.

Thank you so much everyone! I have the train schedule book I was sent with my Eurorail pass, and it has Basel to the various destinations, but Interlaken is not listed?
But I REALLY appreciate everyone's advice..I leave today so you all saved the day!

Thank you!

Re: Basel to Interlaken

Unfortunately, Eurail is not a train operator...it is just a ticketing/pass agency. So is Raileurope. Neither give information on all departures.

So when you seek information about European trains it is always best to use the official railway website for that country. All have English pages, most give fares as well.

Eurail passes are not automatically the cheapest option, by the way. Frequently they are exactly the opposite. If you travel again, research point-to-point fares on the relevant websites before buying a pass. You may be pleasantly surprised.

Travel Tips for Interlaken

See the mountains and lakes. ...

by Nexus7

See the mountains and lakes. If you want to be in a touristy place go to Interlaken, which is fun and very safe. There is a lot to do such as sky diving, ice climbing, and parasailing. It is situated between two gorgeous lakes with the Jungfrau range in the background. Skydiving, staying at Balmers (love those guys) and going to Lauterbrunnen see the waterfalls.

Reach JUNGFRAU (4158 M)

by Sharrie

Reach JUNGFRAU (4158 M): 'TOP OF EUROPE' is the name of the restaurant on the 3454 m Jungfraujoch which offers visitors panoramic view of ALETSCH GLACIER - longest in the world, beginning at the foot of Jungfraujoch & continuing south into Rhone Valley. Jungfraujoch is departure point for many skiing, glacier & mountain climbing tours. The journey from Interlaken is actually more interesting than standing on this mountain itself as one can't see the majestic view of the mountain from here, although you can have a very good view of the glacier.

Swiss architecture

by Jenniflower

The Swiss architecture is so unique and stands on its own. The wood is warm and welcoming, and the buildings very doll-housey in style. Very nice I think, very holiday-ish :) Our hotel wasnt like this at all unfortunately...next time we come to Interlaken we will opt to stay in a Swiss chalet B&B rather, to experience something different.

Packing...

by CandS

A small day pack comes in handy for long hikes... And a good backpack will come in handy for the walks to and from your accommodation... Comfortable walking shoes are a must...you will do lots of walking in Switzerland... :) Take LOTS of film...it is so pretty everywhere you look...you will want to take heaps of photos...

Aletsch Glaciar

by jorgec25

The great Aletsch Glaciar is not exactly close to Interlaken, but it's a great opportunity for a nice road trip to leave from Interlaken, and drive through the mountain passes (via Grimsel Pass) until Fiesch. There you can catch the funicular up until the Eggishorn and have a fabulous view of the entire Aletsch Glaciar.

Another highlight of the Eggishorn is the possibility to climb to the summit, using a trekking path (not for the fain of heart).

If the weather permits, you can also have lunch outdoors, with a view that I believe not many restaurants have.
