Quaint Hotel in Great Town
We just stayed at the Hotel Alpina and found the hotel staff to be delightful and the breakfast to be sufficient. The hotel is the typical chalet/alpine style with plenty of woodwork and some quirky designed rooms. The hotel is on the edge of the village and a comfortable walk to the center of town as well as to the key sights in Kandersteg. One tip is to avoid getting a room too close to the road as the road is not terribly busy, yet the road noise can be a distraction. We reserve two rooms and in both, we found the bathrooms only contained a shower, yet had relatively modern fixtures and good lighting (one room did have a sink in the common sleeping area). I would recommend the hotel for someone looking for comfort and a fair price. To be clear, this is not the Four Seasons nor the Ritz Carlton, yet the family who runs the hotel is very friendly and given the International Scouting Center is located in Kandersteg, everyone welcomes strangers.
Unique Quality: Kandersteg is a gem. We stumbled upon the village as it is the first stop of a train (car carrying train!) that connects central and southern Switzerland. Kandersteg has unbelievable hiking trails, a stunning glazier lake (Oeschinen), waterfalls, snowcapped peaks, ski jumping, alpine slide, and much much more. It is a great year around destination. We were delighted and suprised and cannot wait to go back!
