Walk up from the Oeschinensee to the Blumlisalp

by eurotravels

It's a tiring walk to get a close up of the glacier (about 6 hours return) but worth every step. We were lucky enough to see an avalanche and you can feel the cold when you stand opposite the glacier.

Oeschinensee

by sandysmith

The most popular excursion from the village of Kandersteg is to Oeschinensee - and rightly so. The blue turquoise water is perfectly framed by the majestic crags of the Blumlisalp range. Its an idyllic setting and very relaxing even just to sit on the cafe terrace drinking in the view.

Oeschinensee Hikes

by sandysmith

Many hiking trails start from the lake. A popular one is the 3 hour round trip from the top of the cable-car to Heuberg and Oberbargli gives wonderful views over the lake and someday I will be back to do this - just ran out of time this visit. :-( The hike takes in the pastures seen on the left hand side of this pic.

Longer hikes reach the Blumlisalp Hut - proper mountain equipment is required for this hike though but I believe the views of the glacier are amazing.

The Oeschinensee is a very beautiful lake and a great place to start a walk to the Blumlisalp and it’s glaciers. I have put more photos in my travelogue on Kandersteg. This is one of a number of walks around Kandersteg featured in the Cicerone book “The Bernese Alps” (page 148).

"The Oeschinensee"

"The Blumlisalp and glaciers"

"The Bernerhof"

Very high standards for a 3 star hotel, it was clear how much the proprietors care.

"The view from our bedroom"

and again in the "alpenglow". Even my husband got romantic and that's a rare event!

"You could go paragliding"

.. or just take it easy on a beautiful walk amongst the masses of wild flowers (early July is a good time for the flowers). Some are apparently quite rare, others are just weird.

October Hiking

by hollybdc

My partner and I will be traveling from Zurich to Altdorf (train) to hike to Kandersteg mostly via Alpine Pass, then train back to Zurich over days 5-18 Oct.

Qs: We hoped the October booking would make the central BO less crowded. Any chance of this?
We would like to stay in huts Blumlisalp, Weber, and Rotstock. Is this reasonable in terms of availability in both level of crowd and the huts being open (granted weather permitting)? If experiences are generally bad, any suggestions instead?

Lastly, we are forming backup plans incase any one day is not weather permitting on the hike. Any train destinations you think should NOT be passed up?

Thankyou kindly.

I trust you and your partner are highly experienced hikers, as the hike from Griesalp to Kandersteg via Bluemlisalphuette borders on a technical climb, even in the best of conditions. Take a look at http://www.bluemlisalphuette.com/ for contact information to the keepers.

The hike is not that difficult and not really part of your route if everything goes fine. Lots of Swiss people do it with kids.

You should check with the huts before you go. Not just for reservation reasons as well as for weather/snow condition. In that time of the year everythings possible.

sorry confuesed the huts. It might very well be on your route! Sorry again!

I believe you're thinking of the Gemmi Pass from Leukerbad to Kandersteg. The hike the OP refers to is MUCH more difficult, and should only be attempted by experienced hikers with proper equipment.

Stage 10 of Alpine Pass Route Griesalp-Hohturli-Oeschinensee-Kandersteg is said to be difficult with sections of fixed roap and rocks/boulders. Some areas actually have service road. I have read nothing about this being too technical for avid fit hikers, albeit reasonable weather. I imagine it becomes a different story with snow. The treks to the huts are different--and we won't even think to attempt in poor weather. Agreement on this at least?
Past Murren, heading southwest, we want to have alternative destinations that are only a few hours at most by train. Suggestions on towns/cities?

And I never said it was too technical for avid, fit hikers. I said, "I trust you and your partner are highly experienced hikers." You say that you are. Bully for you.

Just about the entire country is within a few hours' train ride. Some suggestions: Bern, Murten, Brig, Sion, Adelboden, Kandersteg.
