Don't like my hotel?

I absolutely love the Bernerhof. However, I'm sure someone out there won't like it for some reason. Not to worry. There are a few other choices for accommodation. Stop by the tourist office, and they'll help you get a room.

chalet favorita: chalet favorita

We stayed at this chalet for ten days. The lady who rented it to us was wonderful and picked us up at the train station and came back ten days later to bring us back to the station. The chalet had 4 bedrooms, two living rooms, a kitchen, two bathrooms and a seperate shower room. It also was fully stocked with cookware, dishes, fondue pot and all the etras you would have at home. It was extremely clean and very wonderful . We woke up everyday and walked the 4 minute walk to the bakery for fresh bread and the train station was only ten minutes away. There was a back patio that looked out into the snow peaked mountains. What a wonderful place.

Lötschenpasshütte: cozy mountain hut

This cozy, and I mean that in the most literal sense, hut is en route of the Lötschenpass Glacier hike. At 2690 meters, this is the perfect place to stay overnight when hiking this 2 day trek.

This unique wind and solar powered mountaineers' hut is always brimming with muscular and trim alpinists donning trekking poles. After arriving from a grueling 9 hour trek up the mountain and across the glacier, the hut is a welcoming sight. The warm haven holds about 40 people, but don't expect any luxury accomodations. The bathroom is an outdoor outhouse, so in the middle of the night when you are freezing on top of the mountain, it is quite uncomfortable to run outside and pull your pants down.

The beds are not quite what I would call a bed. Rather, you have a section of a long mattress, segmented into sections of about 6 people. You will literally be sleeping right next to your neighbor. You better like them, and you better hope they don't smell or snore. Imagine the amount of bedding to be so narrow that you can't even extend your elbows without hitting the person next to you. In fact, they like to refer to this sleeping accomodation as the "mass camp" - go figure.

Despite the tight accomodations, the staff is extremely friendly and will cook you a delicious, warm, vegetarian meal. You'll meet many foreigners hiking along the Bernese Alps, and it is enjoyable to exchange stories amongst the warm fire, while watching the sun set in the most pristine of locations.

Unfortunately, the hut is a bit expensive (54 CHF) - they can get away with this because you can't very well run elsewhere and find accomodation amidst a massive glacier unless you're willing to brave the weather in a tent.

Unique Quality: there's no better view you could ask for at 2690 feet above sea level.

Berghotel Schwarenbach: Backpackers Moutain retreat

This mountain hut provides splendid scenery in its isolated position - only reachable by foot mind you so definitely suited to the backpacker/hiker enthusiast.
Its basic but provides adequate facilities for those usually just spending a night here.
Rooms available are:
6 double rooms and 2 single rooms with washbasin - communal showers
6 rooms with 6 beds (linen provided) - again communal showers
3 dormitories with 15 beds and another larger dormitory with 28 beds - all with sleeping bags provided. These looked rather cosy tucked away in the loft!
Open from Feb_Oct depending upon winter conditions whilst in winter dorm and kitchen are available.

Unique Quality: We didn't actually stay here but enjoyed a coffee on its terrace and noticed that the food looked good too.

It was built in 1742 as a customs house - one of the oldest mountain huts in Switzerland now. Famous visitors include Pablo Picasso, Mark Twain and Alexander Dumas.

Scout Centre: Dib Dib Dib Dub Dub Dub

Unique Quality: Half way between the Sunnbel cable-car and the centre of Kandersteg is a large scout convention centre. So if you are on a scout expedition this is where you'll surely end up.
We saw many scouts during our stay and there are certainly many activities for them in this area.

In 2007 we saw even more scouts - in fact Kandersteg was having Kanderjam - hundreds of scouts were here for the centenary special. Camp sites were set up as well as the hostel and an entrance to the site was errectd in typical fashion.

Hotel Zur Post: How did they know??

Unique Quality: The hotel has a nice small restaurants for its residents as well as a separate area for the public. Well the evening my swiss VT friends Elisabeth and Remo came and stayed over in Kandersteg for our last night we had meringues for dessert. How apt as the last hike undertaken with Elisabeth on the VT meet 2 years ago was above Meirringen - famous for its meringues of course!

Hotel Zur Post: Family Run Small Hotel

A small and friendly 2 star (but a really good 2 star) that I discovered through the Kandersteg tourist site and was then able to book direct with the hotel. We enjoyed our stay here the owners were only too happy to provide us with maps and information and give suggestions for things to do and see.
Would definitely return here again if in Kandersteg.

..and we did in Aug 2007. This time we were in an annexe just at the back of the hotel with great views of the mountains. It was really cosy - a twin room with a sitting area shared a shower and a toilet with another single/double room. It was ideal for our party of 3 and was like having a self contained flat with the facilities of the hotel on hand. We also had a terraced balcony with chairs and table to sit out at and enjoy.

Unique Quality: Friendly staff, cosy rooms with good food - you can choose to have half board (22 Sfr extra) or just bed and breakfast. Rooms without private facilities (available on same floor) from Sfr48 and Sfr 58 with facilities - a bargain for Switzerland. Restaurant was popular with locals - note closed on Mondays but Hotel is open all year round.
