The Romantic Way

Take the post bus from Meiringen climbing on spectacular twisting roads to 2000m eventually arriving at the Grosse Scheidegg right into the heart of the mountains with the 12,000' peak of the Wetterhorn dominating and the Eiger north-face in front. There are also spectacular views of the Rosenlaui Glacier. A visit to the Reichenbach Falls can be incorporated into this trip too.

Hiking

There are many short and long hikes available from Meiringen. They take you up on both sides of the Hasli valley. Some of them you can combine with ropeway rides. .
I recommend that you bring hiking boots of some sort or other, a day pack, water, sun and rain protection and an apple. There are plenty of restaurants all over the place but of course you are free to picnic somewhere too.

Bike through the Haslital

A very easy bike tour (28 km) on the ground of the valley of Hasli. From Meiringen go direction Balm/Unterbach along the canal to Brienz. There you can visit the Living Museum Jobin where you can learn about the traditional wood carving of the village. On the way back you can stop at the Ballenberg museum.

Haslital is the local name of the valley around Meiringen and inside a beautiful old wooden building next to the church you may see the Hasli- & Naturmuseum Meiringen with plenty of exhibits about the life in the valley and in the alps high above it. There are also 150 different birds shown in the museum - a good chance to see rare birds from a short distance !
The museum is open daily 03.00-06.00p.m.
July&August also Monday-Friday 07.00-09.00p.m.
FREE entrance, But donations are welcome !!

MEIRINGEN

"BEAUTIFUL AREA"

MEIRINGEN IS THE CHIEF TOWN IN THE HASLI VALLEY ABOVE LAKE BRIENZ. WE STAYED IN A CHALET APARTMENT IN HASLIBERG REUTI ON THE MOUNTAIN ABOVE MEIRINGEN FOR A WEEK. REICHENBACHFALLE IS JUST OUTSIDE OF TOWN AND HAS A FUNICULAR TO THE TOP. THIS IS THE FALLS FROM WHICH IT IS THOUGHT THE FICTIONAL CHARACTER, SHERLOCK HOLMES AND MORIARTY FELL TO THEIR DEATH.

"SHERLOCK HOLMES"

THERE IS A MUSEUM CONTAINING MEMORABILLA BELONGING TO HOLMES AND DOCTOR WATSON. HIS CHARACTER WAS RESUSCITATED BY CONAN DOYLE A FEW YEARS AFTER THE FALL FROM REICHENBACHFALLE.

"30 MINUTES FOR US TO GET TO THE STATION"

WE WALKED A QUARTER OF A MILE TO THE BUS STATION AND THEN RODE THE BUS DOWN THE MOUNTAIN TO BRUNIG WHERE WE COULD CATCH THE TRAIN TO MOST PLACES IN SWITZERLAND.
