Appt location in Spiez

by prasad14

Hi,

Based on the feedback I recd. from VTers, I searched for holiday appts in Spiez. For my requirements and budget, I found these appts in two regions

1. BubenbergStrasse in Spiez town
2. Faulenesse

I want's VTers help on choosing one among the above. The prime criteria is that we'd dependent on trains for traveling around Spiez. Option #1 is defintely closer to the railway station but have to negotiate a steep climb to the railway station and Option 2 demands that we take the local/post bus which adds one more constraint. Option 2 appears to be in great surrounding, but Option 1 is close to Migros/Co-op etc.,

Pl. let me know your opionion on these two places.

You basically listed the pros and cons right. Faulensee has no real shopping possibility but a lot of Restaurants at the lake shore...however quality not the very best but not bad either. And not much else going on. Spiez is similar but with some more Restaurants, bars, outdoor pool, Minigolf, one of the best ice cream parlors in the area, a cool movie theatre and some other kind of shopping possibilities.

May I ask why Spiez? It is such a great crossroad for so many more beautiful places.

HoH asked why Spiez?

Nothing particular. I wanted to stay in central Switzerland so that I could go on several day trips to cover most of Switzerland (I'm not into Skiing etc.,). I thought of Bern and Luzern for better connectivity, but since they are relatively bigger towns, I dropped the idea. Other option was Interlaken, but I thought connectivity is better in Spiez. Also, I happened to spend a couple of hours in Spiez in one of my previous trips and liked it.

What are the other places you could recommend that meets my criteria (central Switzerland, good connectivity, quiet location). I'd be happy to look around the places you recommend.

Thanks a lot.

Travel Tips for Spiez

Lake Promenades

by german_eagle

When in Spiez you *have* to go down to the lake and enjoy the recreation area there. Beside all sorts of water sports like sailing, surfing, just swimming or so, tennis and other activities are offered.

Don't miss a walk along the lake promenades. Especially on the bank toward the castle hill you find nice cafes, benches etc. to relax and watch.

visit Thun, it is a Must !

by globetrott

Visiting Thun is a must, when spending your vacation in Spiez. You may get there easyly by train or - much more elegant - by ship sailing on the Thunersee. The city of Thun dates back to medieval times, you may still see part of the medieval townwall, a great castle and lovely houses in the centre of the town.
Calculate at least half a day for Thun, all sights of interest are to be done easyly and within walking-distance from the train-station and the ship-landing closeby the station.
read more about it on my Thun-page !

Schloss Schadau & the largest painting

by globetrott

Schloss Schadau is just 7 km from Spiez and it shows the largest painting in Switzerland : The city of Thun is shown in a size of 39m x 7,5m and the painting was made in 1814 by Marquard Wocher. Schadau is a nice palace, that is mostly overseen by the tourists, although it is just about 2 km east of the city of Thun, and you will pass by it, when approaching Thun by ship. Schloss Schadau is dating back to the middle of the 19th century and it was built for a rich banker from Neuchatel. Nowadays you may see inside that palace the "Museum of Gastronomy" with various fancy cork-screws, precious china, cooking-books and menus.
Inside that palace you will also be able to dine in a speciality-restaurant named "Arts Restaurant"
The gastronomy-museum is open Tue-Thu 02.00-05.00p.m.
The "Arts restaurant" is open daily except mondays

St.Beatus-Hoehle is closeby as well

by globetrott

Beatushoehle might be an interesting place to go, when the weather is not good enough for a hike or mountain-tour. You will find this cave at the northern bank of Thunersee, about 10km north-east of Spiez. You may get there by car or much easyer by a cruise on Thunersee. Holy Beatus spent several years of his life inside this cave in a hermitage. Next to the cave with stalagtites there is also a waterfall, a museum and a souvenirshop. When driving along the panorama-road along the noth bank of Thunersee, you have to leave that road close to Sundlauenen. When arriving by ship you just have to follow the path through the woods in order to get to Beatushoehle.
The caves and the museum are open
between Palm Sunday and October daily between 10.30a.m. and 05.00p.m.
the museum closes 30 minutes later !

Lakeside Villages

by steventilly

There are lots of villages dotted about the shores of Lake Thun, and the best way to visit many of them is by Lake Steamer. Also there are other attractions, such as the caves at Beautushohlen, that are easily visited by using the boat.
