Thun, the 10th biggest city of Switzerland
by call_me_rhia
Well, it doesn't actually look like a city at all. Thus is a large-ish town set on a charming lake - called Lake Thun (would you have guessed it?). It supposed to be the gateway to the Bernese Oberland, which is the home of many glorious mountains - and, more generally speaking, one of Switzerland's most scenic areas. The highlights of Thun aren't many - but they are pretty nonetheless: a charming old city centre, an imposing castle, on old covered wooden bridge and really friendly people.
Museum Pass…Thunersee Region..
by Greggor58
I would strongly suggest this pass if you’re going to spend any significant amount of time in and around Thun.
Im always in favor of reducing the hassle of reaching into my pockets to find more cash for entrance to an attraction and generally, when I am exploring an area and its culture I am spending time in as many museums and galleries as my time will allow. This type of pass is usually good value and once it’s paid for, access to the included attractions is simple, just a question of budgeting time.
The Thunersee Museum Pass includes unlimited access to 12 different museums and galleries in the city of Thun and the Lake Thun region.
This pass is a really good deal at 25 CHF and is valid of one year. Included also is a transport offer also, a one way boat trip from Spiez to Oberhofen or the other way around. And a one way bus transport from Thun to Spiez or Oberhofen. So this pass can be used for a portion of a journey to get you to on your way, only requiring a transport back to Thun for example if you were wanting to do a day trip on the lake and include some of the museums in Oberhofen and Spiez.
You can purchase this pass at a number of vendors in the region including any of the museums included in the pass, the tourism office in Interlaken, Thun or you can order before you leave your home and it will be mailed to you.
The following is a list of the included attractions:
The Kunstmuseum , Thun.
Kunstsammlung,Hans and Marlis Suter, Oberhofen
Schlossmuseum, Thun.
Gastronomie Museum, Thun.
Spielzeugmuseum, Thun.
Thun Panorama, Thun.
Schloss Hunegg Hilterfingen, Hilterfingen.
Schloss Oberhofen, Oberhofen
Schloss Spiez, Spiez.
Museum Uhren and Mechanische, Oberhoffen.
Touristik Museum der Jaungfrau Region, Interlaken.
Zinnfiguren Museum, Interlaken. http://www.thunersee.ch/en/erlebnisse/sehenswertes/museumspass.html

The Schilthorn peak is ranking...
by pam_smiles
The Schilthorn peak is ranking among the most popular excursion sites in all Switzerland: it became a world famous place due to its rotating restaurant at an altitude of 3,000 m - offering a spectacular 360° panoramic view over the Alps - and the shooting of the James Bond film 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service'. The Schilthorn cableway is open all year round and takes you up to the peak in 30 minutes, its base terminal is located at only 18 km from Interlaken.
VT Meeting
by sandysmith
Sept 22nd 2002 - Thun was the venue for a VT get together. It had not long been long since my last visit to Switzerland but I needed little persuasion to return again a few weeks later (especially with good company and accomodation arranged for me...thanks so much Rebibi). The weather was not wonderful but the people were so warm-hearted and we had a lot of fun. If you can make a meeting...don't hesitate to go.
This is usually what happens at such meetings.....eating and taking pics!! here is Rhia and me in action (pic courtesy of YumYum)
Bodyboarding in the town center!
by berenices
We were strolling towards the famous wooden bridge when we saw a couple of guys bodyboarding all the way down to the other bridge, walk back up towards the wooden bridge, go down near the sluice gates, and start all over again. It looked quite amusing to see bodyboarding without the waves, and in the middle of town even. The rushing and churning waters near the sluice gates, and the fast current seem to be enough for these guys. On the other bridge, we saw 3 guys diving from the central post of the bridge to plunge noisily into the fast waters below, climb up the bank, go back to the bridge, and dive again. Apparently these activities are well-tolerated here, people didn't even bother to watch, except for visitors like us.
