Panzermuseum Thun & Thun accomodation

Hello all
I'm curious about visiting this museum when i visit Thun this Summer. I've heard it's attached to an Army base. Have any VT'ers been there? If so, can you advise on whether i need to make an appointment to visit or whether photo's are allowed?
I couldn't find an email address online for the Museum either, so if anyone can help there i would appreciate it.

Also, if you could give me some idea of where the museum is in relation to Thun city itself, then that would be great!
Also, if you know a reasonably priced place in Thun to stay i'd love to hear it :)

I will spend my summer holiday in Interlaken and I thought my husband would love to visit this place, but it seems they are willing to arrange group visits and I don't think two people will be considered a 'group'.

I don't think you are out of luck with regard to visiting this place just yet, as it does say 'guided tours or visits'. So there is still hope :)
I have emailed them so i'll wait and see if they refuse me entry because i am just one person :)

Travel Tips for Thun

Directional Signs…Points of Interest…You can’t GO

If you’re worried about finding your way around the historical Old Town then hopefully you can be put at ease with the knowledge that you’ll find in key areas, easily identifiable signs to point you in the direction that you are looking to go.

Coming from the train station just before you cross the Banhoffbrucke, the bridge over the Aussere Aare, you’ll see one of these signs. This particular one indicates a direction and if you are headed for the Obere Hauptgasse or the Schloss Thun, you’ll know for certain which way to go. There are others around so just in case that you’re not feeling confident about which direction you’re going in have NO FEAR…It’s a smallish area anyhow and Im sure that you wont have difficulty exploring here anyhow.

Study the entire area, for no one area in Switzerland has such ready access to so many sights. If you click on this map it gets VERY large. Notice Interlaken is on the far end of the lake with the city of Thun closest to you and Spiez midway on the right side and about a dozen smaller towns peppered throughout. To me its the best area in Switzerland and has the most to see. The peaks looming in the distance include Wetterhorn, Eiger, Monch and Jungfrau. If the Matterhorn was here we'd have em all in a 30 mile radius..lol. I took a motorhome through here in 1984 and spent 4 lovely days just exploring the area. the people are friendly , the facilities are wonderfull , the scenery is breathtaking and it is a wonderfull memory.

Are REALLLLY handy if you're going to explore Thun by yourself...They are FREE and readily available at the Tourist Center located at the Thun train Station..

There's a decent map in both of these brochures that illustrate the Old Town and a co-relating index to explain the nature of the historic buildings that you'll find on your walkabout...

The brochure entitled "Historic Sites" is the brochure that gives you the BEST synopsis of the history of each building that is considered a highlight..

Grab these if you're intending to explore Thun on your own..Its self evident how useful they can really be..

Here is a good map. Get to know this area of Switzerland especially. i feel it is the most central location and has many wonderfull features and sights to see. If all you did was base yourself in Interlaken and fan out in a 50 mile radius you would have much to see indeed, The Bernese Oberland and the Thunersee are so intrinsically special many acclaimed writers in history(Rousseau/ Thackery /Twain for example) used the area for creative inspiration. I talk about it considerably on my other Swiss pages.

waterside bars and cafes

The river is ideal for a promenade and you can always stop for a snack or too..there are plenty of cafes and bars along the riverside.
Must be really pleasant in the warm weather and a bustling place too. Some of the intricate work on the buildings hewre reminded me of the italian lakes area.
