LAKE THUN? or Interlaken

by jmelee

Hello,

My husband and I are taking a night train from Venice to Bern. We were going to spend the day in Bern and then travel on to Thun and make that our "base". We are really needing some time to relax, go hiking etc. take a boat ride to interlaken etc. Any ideas on hotel/resorts in Thun (preferred on Lake Thun) would be appreciated.

Best place to start is http://www.thunersee.ch/index_en.asp
You will have so much choice, everyone will have their favourite recommendations, depends on your budget but you are guaranteed quality and value in Switzerland. Any other specific advice - please ask. From a personal perspective, I started my love affair with the Bernese Oberland around Thun the town and lake, but now prefer to be beyond Interlaken in the Grindelwald/Lauterbrunnen area.
Regards
Chris

Oh yes, the Thunersee website is the best one for you. You'll find plenty of tips.

I can recommend two nice hotels at Lake Thun:

3star Hotel du Lac in Merligen (small village a couple of miles from Thun). Right on the lake, with pool, garden, excellent views, rooms to the lake with balcony.

4star Hotel Hirschen, Gunten (also a small village a couple of miles from Thun). right on the lake, long tradition, garden, own beach, salons, large and beautiful rooms to the lake with balcony, good food (four-course dinner with choices).

Both are connected by bus and ferry with Thun and Interlaken, very sufficient.

Let me know if I can help further,

Ingo

Thanks so much for the website and tips!
Is anyone familiar with Bellevue au Lac?

seems a good choice. again i stopped in Hilterfingen one year, actually in a chalet rather than hotel. i will repeat what i said before that you will always get quality and value in Switzerland and particularly in this region. make sure you get a room with the lake view - well worth confirming. you will have to realise that you will have some distance to travel from hilterfingen to thun and to interlaken (either end of Lake Thun) - will you have car or use public transport? please visit my travel pages for some advice (and leave ratings!). please ask any more specific questions you wish

Chris

Travel Tips for Thun

Old Town Stroll

by german_eagle

It is a pleasure to walk along the narrow streets of the old town. You can discover wonderful gems, like old houses, (a few) frescos, fountains etc.

A very nice way to get up to the castle hill are the covered staircase from Obere Hauptgasse, the quiet alley from Plätzli square or the staircase by the city walls in the north.

In any case, stroll through the old town, enjoy some (window) shopping and have a coffee or so in a nice cafe. A picnic by the castle, on a bench overlooking the old town!

From Interlaken Ost, the trip to Grindelwald took 40 mins by train. The views kept getting better as the train climbed towards Grindelwald, which is even closer a gateway to the Jungfrau region than Interlaken. It was almost dark upon arrival but I still chose to stay in an uphill hostel, right up on the hill so that I have to march on many 45 degrees slopes with my loaded backpacks under the starry night. Whew! The hostelier had better kept her promise that the accommodation would be a cosy one with good view of the mountains.

Her advice was good. I awoke to a clear day full of bright spell and the entire Grindelwald was gorgeous from the room's window.

I continued on up to...

I continued on up to Eigerwand, which is two stations away from Jungfraujoch, but close enough to see Jungfrau's peak smoulder and the phenomenal jade-white glaciers bite onto the massive rocks.

Also from Lauterbrunnen, you may take a cable car up to the revolving restaurant which sits on the 2970m Schilthorn, where James Bond performed his stunts in On Her Majesty's Secret Service. The peak offers views of hundreds of Alpine peaks and is almost as popular a destination among mountain lovers as Junfraujoch's. The return cable car fare costs 83 CHF, nearly half of that of Junfraujoch. These spectacular mountains, glaciers, waterfalls and lakes, plus scores of charming villages and holiday resorts collectively define the Bernese Oberland.

This completed my 6 days visit to Switzerland. Sweet! Though time was chasing me out, I have had good moments of it. One thing for sure, except for being lost in the beauty, my navigation skills have improved tremendously.

On the way back to Geneva to catch a night train to Barcelona, I swung by Switzerland's capital, Berne. Because I had to make a transit here. I couldn't do much but wandered around the vibrant city's arcaded streets, which were packed with tons of people. But I will come back again to appreciate its charm. Till then.

Rathaus

by sandysmith

The Rathausplatz is in the centre of the old town...a colourful square with its flower bedecked fountain and old buildings....the hotel here is very good too apparently.
its was very quiet here on an overcast Sunday in late September...but I kinda like it with not too many people in the way.
