The Hills are alive....
.....with the sound of music. An alpine horn or Fugel with the sound resounding around the mountains was amemorable sight and sound. It greeted us on our arrival in the village - what perfect timing!!

My wife and I will be Wengen between 19/12/2009 and 26/12/2009 (departing in themorninging of the 26/12). We would like to make a trip up to the Jungfrau and Eiger, are we able to pre book or can we book when we arrive? And does anybody have any other ideas for some sight seeing, bearing in mind that we would still like to attempt to ski?
no need tobook in advance !
Eiger is to look at, jungfrau has a train to go to
It's true you really don't need to book in advance. I would hold off for the trip up to the Jungfraujoch for the first day or so, so that you can acclimate to the altitude. Wengen itself is already 'up on the Alp', but don't forget that the Jungfraujoch train station is the 'highest' in Europe (the second highest in the world) - some people need the day or so to be ready for going so high in a train. Also, it's not a cheap train trip - but well worth it, something you should do at least once in life. (For those on a budget though, the first train of the morning and the last one going up in the afternoon have speciaal discounts. (Of course with the last one, it limits your time at the top.
As far as other sightseeing - that region of Switzerland (the Bernese Oberland)
has some of the most beautiful vistas in the world. Grindelwald is a nice little village, same can be said for Lauterbrunnen. A little further afield Thun is a nice old town. And again, a short trip further - Bern. Although my home is in the city of Zürich, and my Swiss citizenship is through Grindelwald (I am an Ami whose home has been Switzerland for the last 30 years) of the larger 'towns' in this country, I think Bern is the nicest.
Whatever you do and see in this county, it will certainly be among the most enjoyable you will experience and will give you memories to last a lifetime.
By the way, 'attempting to ski'??? If you want to give it go, ask around at the ski shops in Wengen (or Grindelwald, for that matter) they can surely suggest something. (There are also winter hikes in the area and sledding.)
Have a great time!
Thanks Swiss Ami, your reply has been a great help in planning our excusions. Switzerland may not be the cheapest country, but I've been told it makes up for it with its beauty.

Just a few km from Wengen, in the valley below the village you may see one of the most spectacular waterfalls INSIDE the mountain : The Truemmelbach-falls are certainly the major attraction of Lauterbrunnen. These waterfalls are quite unique and also listed as a UNESCO-World-heritage: You have to take a lift up the mountain and will see 10 glacier-waterfalls INSIDE the mountain - a long path will lead you to the most spectacular places.
These waterfalls alone are draining the Eiger, Moench & Jungfrau-glaciers at the west-side - 20.000 litres of water per second will flow through these cascades, everything is wet and hazy inside the mountain, but not at all slippery. All of the tunnels you have to walk through are lighted well, and you might need about 1 hour to see and enjoy everything !
The entrance-fee for the Truemmelbach-falls is 10 Sfr. and includes the ride on the lift, that takes you up the mountain, BUT you still have to step up many additional steps in order to get to the highest point of the cascades. Make sure you WALK DOWN all the way to the entrance-gate, otherwise you will miss some of the best waterfalls !!
Sorry, this place is NOT accessible for handicapped tourists !!
The lift just takes you to a higher place, where you may see the falls ONLY, when you are able to climb up hundreds of additional steps !!
The Truemmelbach-Falls are open April - November
daily between 09.00a.m. and 05.00p.m.
in July & August : 08.00a.m. - 06.00p.m. !!
The car-parking there is free of charge !!
Mystery-park in Interlaken
is closed now,maybe for-ever !!
I leave the infos here, so you know,
what it was all about
when you pass by that strange building
in the east of Interlaken

You certainly have to decide for yourself, wether "Mystery World" is a place that you would like to see or not . The entrance-fee is 48 sfr - I would rather go to one of the mountains instead and maybe I will give it a try on a rainy day...
I have not been inside Mystery World, simply because I think that Erich von Daeniken has funny theories without any historic fact behind of them. He still believes in exterritorical visits even in places, where the corn-fields had certain patterns a few years ago, and finally science found out that this was nothing else than just a joke by some people.... and while the newspapers kept telling us , that human beeing never would find a way to make such giant patterns, 2 elderly men finally revealed that they could be done by a long rope that was turned around the centre like a pair of compasses and walking around without leaving any traces was easy by stilts....
BUT there seems to be a big market for such "Mysteries" today, and "Mystery World" helps a lot to fill a lot of the hotel-beds in the area, even out of season.
The "Mystery park" is open daily 10.00a.m. - 06.00p.m.
the entrance-fee is 48 sfr / 32 Euro per person
after 03.30 p.m. the entrance-fee is 28 sfr / 18 Euros !
for the carpark you pay 5 sfr per day.
You may go there from Wengen by train and change at Interlaken Ost or in Wilderswil to the bus to Mystery-park.
High above the town of Wengen you can visit a memorial to the great German composer Felix Mendelssohn at a quiet and pretty spot that overlooks the village. It is here during a visit by Mendelssohn that it is thought that he sketched a “scene’ of Wengen and a portion of the Lauterbrunnen Valley in August of 1842, just a few years before he died at the young age of 38.
You reach this Memorial by way of a road that is party paved and partly a gravel trail that winds its way up a hillside overlooking the town. At times the hike can be a little steep but it is definitely worth pacing yourself to visit this spot. It is a peaceful and serene location in a small park like setting cleared out of the forest, there are benches for you to sit and relax or reflect on the beautiful scenery that surrounds you.
The streets are not named in Wengen but if you walk the main road that brings you to the Mannlichen cable car from the train station in a few short minutes you will see a brown sign on the right that will indicate the direction to the Memorial.
Do take some time and visit and relax a little at this lovely spot in the village that honors this great man. ENJOY the view!
Every summer in AUGUST Wengen celebrates the life and music of Felix Mendelssohn with a week long series of performances featuring his greatest works. The exact dates change from year to year but if you are a fan of classical music and you might be in the area at the time do yourself a favor and check out some wonderful music!
I was lucky enough to be in Wengen when a free performance of violin music was being offered in the Protestant Church.
For the summer season Professor Michael Grube of Vienna is performing a variety of music on a weekly basis. If you are visiting during the summer season of 2010 than please do yourself a favor and see and hear this violinist play. If you're not visiting this summer you can still find free musical performances from time time to time and they're advertised around town.
Under the bridge of the rail tracks close to the train station on the roadway that leads down into the lower village you will find postings or a bulletin board that will tell you of music and theatrical events that are happening in Wengen..
During the summer tourist season there is a bevy of free music and events that are not free but here you will find out some otherwise lesser known events that are going on in the village during your visit..
