Squares, fountains and statues
by sue_stone
The old town of Chur is filled with lots of interesting squares. As you wander the narrow streets you will come across said squares, most with fountains and/or unusual statues.
The main square is surrounded by colourful buildings and has an amusing fountain. This square looks like a nice place to relax with a drink, though when we visited (on a Sunday afternoon) everything seemed to be shut, and the weather wasn't alfresco friendly anyway.
The square outside the Cathedral has a fountain and a shady Oak tree. We also had a wander in the Fontanapark, which is a leafy square/park which is home to three small fountains and some pretty gardens. My favourite statue that we came across was a rather rotund person who stands in the middle of a garden under a large tree.
Chur Tip

The marroni stall right next to the train station. Nice warm chestnuts when you are waiting for your train! And the man who operates the store is very friendly and will pick up a chat anytime. Kept patronising the stall everytime we went to Chur...this is my second fondest memory in Chur apart from seeing this guy (sunglasses, hair dyed blonde) who looked like Brad Pitt but more handsome ;-)
Chur in ancient times:
Chur...

Chur in ancient times:
Chur is an old town, though now there is little visible evidence of this. But historical studies show, hoever, that first human settlements were present there 5000 years ago. The place was also a known one during the times of the Roman Empire: in fact, in 3rd century Chur was the capital of the Roman province of Patia Prima. Later Emperors of the Holy Roman Empire, bishops, dukes all wanted to conquer the place to have the strategic road to Italy open to them...
Tirano across the Border.
by dabidc
I think it can be taken for granted that a visit to Tirano is certainly Off the Beaten Path when one starts the day in Chur.
there is enough time in Tirano to enjoy a meal at one of the sidewalk cafes and still walk along main street to see what makes the town attractive to visitors. The valley of the Adda is narrow here and the vines cling to the steep hillside which must make it difficult for the grapes to be collected.
There are many apartments to make the best use of the land in the valley floor, the architecture is all the way from modern to several hundreds of years old. Churches seem to abound.
Graubuendner Kantonalbank

Graubuendner Kantonalbank is an interesting building built in a special Art Nouveau-style of that area. This impressive building was built between 1909 and 1911 by the architects Otto Schäfer and Martin Risch. My favorite decoration is the coat of arms of Graubünden, including the ibex, you will see it in my last photo here !
You will find this building opposite of the Post & Telegraphenamt !
