Hotel Solaria at Bivio
by O.KATALINA about Hotel Solaria at Bivio
This hotel is beautifully furnished in country style with lots of warm pinewood furniture. The restaurant/dining room has a kiln for firing pizza which reinforce the cosy and family-runned atmosphere of this place.
The most heartwarming time of our trip was after enduring 5 hours of travelling the narrow, winding and jamed country roads of Switzerland that afternoon, we finally reached the hotel to be greated by the big beaming and jolly owner at the doorsteps of the hotel! Mine, what a relief and joy this sight brought to us weary travellers!
St Petersburg
by keeweechic about Sovetskaya Hotel***
I stayed at the Sovetskaya Hotel (in the Fontanka section of the hotel which was also known as the Hotel Helen). I had no idea when I booked it (at random through a Hotel book) and took a guess on its location.
Probably about a 20-25 minute from Nevksy Prospekt (the walk warmed me up) along the Fontanka River. I believe there were 2 train stations near by but I didn't look. A huge hotel with its own hospital (don't know whether that's a reflection on the food which certainly wasn't gourmet) but it was certainly comfortable, everything was there (bars, cafe's, restaurants and a pizza restaurant as well - or should I say room.)
The staff were really helpful. I was in the older section but the newer block is more modern. There was no room service or bar fridge. A buffet breakfast was included. This was an assortment of grated carrot, a type of potato salad, beets, slices of cheese, meat patties, pikelets and very strong syrupy coffee. The coffee was in a teapot so I thought it was tea. Even adding milk didn't change the colour or strength that much.
Torre comunale
by yumyum
This prominent landmark is situated on the main square (pizza comunale) in Poschiavo. It is adjacent to the Casa Comunale (town hall) which is called Casa Torre and has been renovated in 1976/77.
Pizza Piccolo
by guiness2 about Pizza Piccolo
The place is nothing special to look at, but its wood-oven cooked pizza is one of the best in Europe. At 68 CZK for a loaded pizza for 2 ($1.80) this is one of the can't miss restaurants in Czech. Pizza
The best pizza on Earth!

The interieur design of the restaurant is fantastic, the wonderful blue corridor to the toilets alone is worth the money and the way there! Filled Pizza with Curry & Pineapple....one of the best pizzas I've ever had!!

Train and Ski Holiday
by Docu2001
Looking for a scenic and charming combination of a great rail trip into Switzerland (we live in Cologne) and great skiing once we get there - in a charming setting ... Don't have to be the highest peaks - just friendly for three-year-olds.
Thank!

My opinion and personal experience is, that there is only one REALLY family-welcomed skiing-area in Switzerland: Berner Oberland. My favourite is Hasliberg. There are mostly gondolas in use, so going uphill with little children is no problem. Hotels and restaurants have special offers for familys with children, for example a self made pizza buffet especially for kids, available already at 18.00 h (Restaurant Twing, Hasliberg-Wasserwendi). Or there are dwarf-trails or long sledge-slopes.
Further information in German and English at

From Cologne you can easily get there via Basel - Bern - Interlaken or via Basel - Luzern. If you choose the route via Luzern, you can book a scenic panorama-train from Luzern to Brünig/ Brienz.
For details contact www.sbb.ch
For cheap and really family-focused accommodation I could recommend REKA-Hotels (Reka-Hotel Hasliberg). --> www.reka.ch (German, French or Italian). Only negative aspect: You have to book veeeery early in advance - or outside the Swiss holiday seasons...

Can anyone tell me food prices in interlaken?
by debsh
Hi, we are flying to Interlaken in september to spend a week in a mobile home and are on a low budget. Can anyone please tell me how much food costs in local shops -basics such as bread, milk, coffee, fruit and veg, chicken, wine, beer. Also are there any cheap cafes for simple burgers/pizza/chips and approx costs. Many thanks.

McDonalds was about 12 Franks for a meal that would cost $8 in Canada, and codoments like ketchup were 50 cents extra. and (middle of the road) restaurants and pubs seemed to be a little more expensive then the rest of our European travels. The food at the grocery stores are a little bit more pricey then average as well especially produce. Like a kiwi costing over 3 franks.

The cheapest places to buy foods are the two supermarkets located near the two railway stations: Migros is close to the western station and Coop is close to the eastern station. The choice is wide so you can choose the fruit and vegetables that cost less. Beer from Germany is cheaper than the local ones.
I cannot remember the precise prices of things, but in general I paid roughly as much as in my own country (Italy).
If you are on a tight budget I suggest to avoid a smaller Coop shop in the very centre of town, it is open for longer hours, but everything is more expensive than in the Coop supermarket near the station.

Where is that mobilehome ?
In Neuhaus at Thunersee ?? That is a distance of 3-4 km from Interlaken and Migros will be your closest supermarket. They also have a great selfservice-restaurant.
In general foodprices are 20-30% more expensive than germany or other european countries.
Something good about MIGROS: they always indicate the price for 100 gramm of any product, so you can easily compare prices, even when one packet is 520 gramm and the other is 378 gramm.

3800 is the PLZ (Postcode) for Interlaken, 8000 might give you prices and other details of shops in Zuerich.
Geneva & Lausanne area
by ronny_m21
Hey there.
Just booked a flight to Geneva early May. Yippie! ;-)
My plans at the moment are stay a couple of days in Lausanne and the a few days in Geneva.
Maybe someone can help me find a good youth hostel? But more: what are the things I should definately not miss in both cities?!
And outside the city limits: any suggestions on hiking trails or off the beaten paths?
Thanks!
And here's a chocolate cookie for your reply ;-)

Dany i write about nightlife above:
Re: Geneva & Lausanne area
by Dany_Kulta
Well, what is not to miss depends on your interests...
The nightlife in Geneva is a little poor (because discos are all in different parts) and really expensive. Discos here are not so big, and people are quiet, except some really big nice parties organized randomly from time to time in big places. So, even if I live in Geneva, I would recommend you Lausanne for nightlife !!!!
Discos in Geneva: (more house music)
NEW BYPASS: Top trendy, house music, be prepared to finish without money, but be sure to see pretty girls in this fashionable disco very select :) 3-4 km from center
PLATINUM: same description as the last one, smaller and more centralized.
PEARL: new disco, house music, like Platinum.
SIP: trendy, different floors, very selective at the entrance
NOMADE: house, medium size, cool
ARCADE: university students disco (thursday and saturday only)
X-S and SHAKERS: small discos in the Old Town, music all styles, full of tourists, au-pair, more relax.
LA GITANA: small disco near the train station with hispanic-latino music.
Lausanne is more trance-house...more speed, and all discos are much more centralized than in Geneva. Also, drinks are cheaper!
MAD: very trendy, trance friday, speed house saturday, the biggest in Geneva-Lausanne area. wonderful programme (www.mad.ch)! 80euros bottle of vodka, 5euros 1 beer(0.25) (cheap for a disco in Switzerland + offering nice programmation)
D!: More electronic, big, trendy
PACHA, KULT: new discos similar to Geneva trendy clubs.
L'ATELIER VOLANT: Latino music
LOFT: different style, sometimes hip hop
