by umpa

hi,

I'm living in London UK and attempting to plan a trip as follows:

(a) Go to St Moritz
(b) Take the Glacier express to Zermatt
(c) Come back to UK

Based on this travel plan, any information on the following would be most helpful.

(a) What is the best way to get to St Moritz from London UK?
(i) Fly to Zurich?
(ii) Fly to Geneva?
(iii) Other?
(b) Having flown to the destination of (a) what is the best mode of travel to get to St Moritz?

(c) Has anyone been on the Glacier express?
(i) Does it need to be booked in advance?
(ii) What form of ticket is needed to travel on it?
(iii) Does it run everyday in October and November 2007?
(iv) Where can I find the times that it runs?

(d) Does anyone have any advice on the airlines or airports that are best from London UK to Switzerland and what is the duration of flights?

(e) Does anyone have any advice on the hotels in St Moritz and Zermatt?

(f) Does anyone have any information on the best activities and entertainment in St Moritz and Zermatt.

thanks for your help in advance.

It doesn't really matter whether you fly in to Geneva or in to Zürich. Zürich is closer to st. Moritz, but Geneva is closer to Zermatt. In both cases the best way to proceed to your destination is by train. Both airports have railway stations with convenient connections to the rest of Switzerland. Have a look at www.sbb.ch for train times. Use "Geneve aereport" for the geneva airport train station and "Zürich flughafen" for the Zürich airport.
The glacier express runs every day. The glacier express is however not the only train on the Zermatt - St. Moritz route. As everywhere else in Switzerland there is a train every hour on that route, and www.sbb.ch can show you the times. The only thing special about the glacier express is the panoramic cars used. Personally I prefer the ordinary trains, as they have windows the open, which is better for photograpy.
Everything about the glacier express however can be found here:
www.glacierexpress.ch
In oder to travel on the glacier express you need a ticket valid for the St. Moritz - Zermatt route, plus the surcharge for the glacier express. If you travel with other trains on the same route you don't need to pay the surcharge.
You can look up prices for the train trips you intend to do on the sbb website. and then have a look at www.swisstravelsystem.ch if there is a pass that might save you some money.

i am travelling in Austria and Switzerland in the summer. You have been given good advice above but one thing I would like to mention. We have been advised not to go on the actual glacier express as due to the windows on the top to enable good view there is terrible reflection and not good for taking pictures. We have been told just to go on the normal trains on that route and still enjoy the wonderful scenery. We are flying to Geneva and home from Geneva with all other travelling internally done by train.

Travel Tips for Saint Moritz

Hiking in summer

by german_eagle

The Alps in general and the Engadine in particular are perfect for hiking. The region around St. Moritz offers more than 500 km hiking paths from easy walks to challenging tours up to mountain tops.

Enjoy the fabulous panoramic views with lakes, glaciers etc. and don't miss the close views - wildflowers!

Great easy walks are: along the lakes, into Fex and Roseg valleys, Muottas Muragl to Alp Languard to name just a few.

Unforgettable long hikes are e.g. Murtel - Fuorcla Surlej - Coaz hut - Pontresina, Muottas Muragl - Segantini hut - Piz Languard - Alp Languard. Be sure to wear hiking shoes, bring layers, a hat, sunglasses, sun care, and always keep in mind that the weather can change within a couple of minutes. A map is a must for the longer hikes.

Retail therapy

by ChristaV

When you are down and out, this is not the town where you want to do some Retail therapy. Although they have some great stuff in the shops it is hellish expensive. But do not let this stop you from doing some window shopping.

One day to St. Moritz

by Toshioohsako

"Christmas time in St Moritz"

I came here from Davos by train (where I used to ski) one day just to look around this famous city. It was one hour ride on a snow express train, probably it was 1999-2000 period.

Its a rich and gorgeous ski town. This picture was scanned as I did not have a DC at that period.
