All around Bargain, Good Location

by ara225 about Best Western Hotel Flora

I got a great deal at this hotel through the internet at 95 Sfr/night. The room rate included breakfast in their restaurant with good service and the front desk was attentive to my needs as well. It is just a short walk from the train station, or to the Reuss River & Kapellbrucke.

The room was roomy, clean and adequate and I was very comfortable. I did have a room that faced an inner courtyard that seemed to be a parking area for workers of various hotels & restaurants in the area. Thus, you could hear the noise late at night when they were ending their shifts. Perhaps you'd be able to request a room on the other side of the building. Other than that, I had a good experience.

If you don't mind using the Best Western chain, this is a good choice for your money.

A Swiss Lunchtime Nap: eat and sleep well...

by Tripack

An original idea for a nap...

You can dine in a Siestahotels and then subsequently have a midday snooze in one of the hotel rooms between 12 noon and 3pm. This midday nap service is free of charge if you have eaten in the hotel. If you decide to go without a meal beforehand and merely have a sleep, the room for this time would cost CHF 20. It is quite easy to check in. Simply contact a member of staff in the restaurant or at reception. Nota bebe: the hotel room for the midday nap may only be used by one person ;-)

Sleep just half an hour so that you do not enter the deep phase of sleep but rather feel fresh and recuperated after your snooze. In the terminology of sleep science, this short sleeping technique is known as a Powernap.

Midday nap in the fresh air, in Zurich and Bern not only do you have the opportunity to take your nap in a hotel room but also in the fresh air, in comfortable original Swiss Hüsler Nest natural beds in the quiet inner courtyard.

Operation peformed by the following hotels:
Best Western Hotel Merian in Basel (november-december)
Best Western Hotel Bären in Bern (all year round!)
Best Western Hotel Flora in Luzern (november-december)
Best Western Premier Hotel Glockenhof in Zurich (november-december)

Comfortable Stay

by TripAdvisor Member Amidee

We stayed in this hotel twice once in 2004 & 2005, it was a great experience. We took overnight train from Paris to Lucerne and reached to this hotel early in the morning. We were thinking we may not get the hotel that early since check in time was 2:00 PM, but the hotel staff was really friendly and nice. They gave us room right away, we were very pleased since we were very tired from the journey. Its very convenient location, just a few steps away from Lucerne main railway station, very close to old town, Lion Monument & famous wooden bridge is just an half mile walk. All restaurents are easily reachable, Centrally located. I would recommend to stay in this hotel.
I will definately stay here again.

Great Location & Friendly Staff

by TripAdvisor Member Patriot1776

My wife and I just returned from a trip to Switzerland which included a 3 night stay at the Hotel Flora. We found the hotel to be very nice and the staff was extremely helpful adn accomodating. We had a room on the 6th floor with a small balcony with a view of Mt. Pilatus and the old town over the rooftops. The hotel was clean and comfortable and had a great location. It was only about 5 minutes from the main train station and the fameous Chapel Bridge. We did not experience any of the difficulties noted in the other reviews. There was a mild smoky smell in the lobby and hallways because unlike the US, smoking is allowed in public areas. You won't find a European hotel without the smell. Our room was a non-smoking room as requested, and there was no smoke smell to be found. The room had pleenty of room and the bathroom was very large by European standards, with a huge tub for soaking in after a long day of sightseeing.

The breakfast was buffet type and included in the room rate. It was good and had a little more variety than the typical European breakfast. We would definately stay there again and recommend it to anyone visiting the city of Lucerne.

As far as our opinion goes,we would rate this hotel the worst of all, during our stay in Switzerland. The rooms and the bathroom were pretty ok. There were no extraordinary facilities here
1.No one even took our luggage to the rooms when we checked in.
We were being told that they lack manpower at that time.
2.One night I had a stomach ache due to which I had to get warm water in my room to drink,we had to ourselves get it and on the top of that we were being charged for that.
3.Even the soaps ,shampoos were not being re kept after cleaning the room. And being asked for the same ,on the third request the same were being given.
4.The worst was the restaurant where we used to have breakfast. There were only two females to attend the entire hall, and they were only interested in serving those people who were offering them tips.
It was not a very good experience on the whole.

What to avoid in Luzern Switz.

by TripAdvisor Member Dah Bar

Luzern Switzerland was flooded in late August 2005. Before then and afterward, my wife and I tried to get reservations a the Best Western Flora for a total of 3 nights in September for our third visit in 4 years.

Throughout our negotiations, ostensibly with the hotel, then later through Luzern Tourism, Flora management high-balled us on price and made no effort to place us on the floor and/or wing we requested, right from the start. The cost was significantly more than we had paid in the past, and management inflexible, so that we were finally turned-off (See my positive review of the Hotel Waldstaetterhof).

The rooms at the Flora are small, as are the beds. The decor and accoustics throughout the hotel, save the lobby, are what I'd call 2-star; you can commonly hear people walking anywhere on the floor, even from in your room. The street outside the hotel becomes rather noisy late at night, and the front desk apparently unresponsive beyond curt lip-service.

The Flora, in my opinion, is barely 3-star, and less so if you discount the fancy lobby where nonetheless piles of luggage are difficult to maneuver around as busloads of tourists have breakfast nearly every morning we were there in the past. The breakfast buffet was also barely adequate, and located in a very smoky room contiguous with the bar where Gaulois-like cigarettes are apparently popular, even early in the morning.

We wanted to stay at the Flora for nostalic reasons, but now we will not return despite the very kind and beyond-the-call efforts of Connie Kaufman at Luzern Tourism.

Stay away from this hotel

We stayed in Hotel Flora because our tour group booked it for our stay in Lucerne. Our room was horrible. Not only very small but they put my husband and I in a room with a twin bed! We thought it was a mistake but when we went to complain, our tour director said that the small bed was normal in Switzerland and to bear it. We then tried to get a bigger room (we were promised at least 2 twin beds in every room we booked with our tour) and found out there were no other rooms.

The staff were very unsympathetic so we decided to bear with it. Besides our room beign very small, the bathroom just had a shower that didn't work very well and only one set of towels. We tried to get more but all we got was the runaround.

We then went down to dinner in their resteraunt. We should have ate out. The food was mediocre at best. Cold chicken, noodles with nothing on them and carrots that had been poorly cooked. Plus it was lukewarm.

We then went to bed. Hard and only a comforter on the bed. No flat sheets at all. We couldn't get an extra cot (we would have to pay for that even though they put us in a single room) so my husband ended up on the floor. A very uncomfortable night.

I don't know how this hotel got a 4 star rating. The hallways are dingy and full of old furniture. Everything needs a facelift badly. The only good thing about the hotel was leaving it for our next destination.
