unfortunately this hotel is closed now !

Chateau Guetsch used to be a well known luxury hotel for many decades before it was recently closed. Nowadays you may still walk uphill or take the small funicular in order to enjoy the perfect panorama-view of the Vierwaldstaetter See / Lake Lucerne and the city. You simply have to insert some coins and the funicular takes you up a few minutes later, maybe they go on a regular basis, or maybe they wait for a minimum number of passengers. I had to wait 5 minutes and we had been just 4 passengers.
It is a pity to see that such a beautiful old hotel is not accepted anymore by modern tourists and it is even worse, as I have been there once in 1978, in its good times.
I was there upon invitation of the chef of Chateau Gutsch,who was one of my regular guests in Axalp/Brienz each summer-season. When I came back in 2005 the hotel was closed...

Unique Quality: You may take a look through the windows and get an idea of the former qualities of this hotel and its restaurant, it is a pity that it is closed now - hopefully NOT for-ever !
The Chateau Gutsch is pronounced in the french way, that is why it is also in the databas of VT with the name Guetsch.

CHATEAU GUTSCH

The Chateau Gutsch is one of most beautiful hotels that I ever seen.It is located on a hill just outside the city center and really it looks like the Castle at Disney World!!.

It was built in 1,888,well that is what our guide told us,but unfortunatelly we didn't had the chance to go up there to see it for inside and with more details in the exterior.What a shame!!.I promise myself to do it on my next visit to Lucerne,really this Castle-Hotel looks beautiful and I am sure that the views of the whole city and lake from above must be amazing!.

The funicular to Chateau Gutsch

The funicular to Chateau Gutsch is the only part of the former luxury hotel that is still operated. Enter the wagon at the station in the city or at the chateau, throw in some coins - it was a rather small amount - and then you might have to wait a few minutes. In my case the funicular started to go upwards 5 minutes after I have entered the wagon. We had been a total of 4 passengers and not a single person at the oncoming wagon.
Like most of the funiculars both wagons are fixed at each other by a thick rope and both wagons will move simultaneously - one going up, the other coming down.
