3 Days in Switzerland

by plamemi

our group of 6 adults (50-60 years old) will be taking a 8-Day train tour of Budapest-Vienna-Prague. Our tour will start on May 21. We will arrive at Zurich on May 18 and have 3 days that we want to visit Switzerland. Can any body give us suggestions on how best to spend the 3 days and which city/hotel should we stay. We heard that we should not miss Lucerne. Also, what is the best way to fly from Lucerne or Zurich to Budapest on May 21 am or May 20 pm.

Thanks for your help.

The best "airline" so far is called MÁV sleeping car, the one-way fare will be 69 Euro if you reserve timely.

The EN-466 train departs Zürich Hbf at 22:40 and arrives Budapest Keleti at 10:49 next day.
There are three beds inside of each compartment, so you would get two compartment for 6 people. If you prefer more room, you can buy it for 79 Euro.

The reservation is on http://www.sbb.ch/en/index.htm

If you won't get the special price that easy for some reason:

- the regular (non-discounted) fare is 109.90 € for 3-bed compartment and 129.90 € for two-bed compartment, this is the price you would pay at the station.
- if you for some reason have difficulty to reserve or the Swiss Rail offers different prices than the Hungarian - please ask

info[at]bahnagentur-schoeneberg.de

in Germany, they do speak English and they can reserve the said train without much issue.

May 20 is Friday, so it's probably a better idea to take the train at that time.

I am not sure, the flight would be a better idea - you save one night in the hotel.

Lucerne is about a one hour train ride from Zurich. Lucerne is an easy town to walk around. Make sure you take in the old town which is right across the Reuss River from the train station. You may also want to visit the old town walls behind old town. Also a walk across several of the bridges and visiting the Lion of Lucerne will top off your trip.

My wife and I stayed one day and night in Lucerne and did all the things I mention in that one day.

Yes, don't miss Lucerne, it's absolutely beautiful. When there don't miss Chapel Bridge and the Lion Monument (and take a cruise on the lake).

Thank you for all the responses. They are very helpful. I have one more question. How would one goes about seeing the Matterhorn assuming that we are staying at Lucerne?

Thank you.

I'll let the real Switzerland experts answer this, but the Matterhorn is in the southern part of Switzerland. I'm sure it would take the better part of the day to go there and back.

Research the Swiss Rail system and the Swiss Pass. Train travel is swift and efficient, train schedules are organised so various train lines connect at hubs.

We had 4 days in Lauterbrunnen ( below Jungfrau) Oct'10. We then took the train to Zurich , approx 2 hours. We also took train Lauterbrunnen to Bern for a day visit, 1 hour in train. Bern is a beautifuk city, full of historic buildings etc. I guess it is approx an hour from Zurich.

Wherever you go you are sure to have a good time.

World's steepest cog wheel

by romanhighlander

Do not miss the worlds steepest cog wheel train going up to 2100 metre to the peak of mount Pilatus. Take the cable car ride from there, and then the bus to the Centre and DO NOT MISS the boat ride on Lake Lucerne. Breathtaking scenery....

Lowendenkmal (The Dying Lion of Lucerne)is a stone monument hewn out of the side of a mountain commemerating the deaths of the Swiss Guard in an uprising at the Tuilleries in France protecting the life of Marie Antionette in 1792.
It is sometimes referred to as 'The Weeping Lion' and upon seeing ot Mark Twain called it 'the saddest most poignant piece of rock in the world.'

b1bob on the alpenhorn

by b1bob

Most of my American friends and neighbours have seen those Ricola (cough drop) commercials where a bunch of folks get together and blow those long alpenhorns. On 29 June 1987, my group went to a Swiss folklore show at the Casino Kursaal. I was called upon to demonstrate the alpenhorn. Some folks might beg to differ, but I didn't have enough hot air to make it go.

by steventilly

See the Hofkirche. This is the cathedral of Lucerne, originally a monastery founded in 750. The bulk of the Gothic structure burned down in 1633 and was replaced with a renaisaance style building, though retaining it's original gothic towers. This makes for a quite unusual blending of the two architectural styles, don't you think?

stroll along the Kapellbrücke. By the way, did you know that the Kapellbrücke was this close to being destroyed by a horrendous 1993 fire... and that much of what stands today is an EXCELLENT restoration from the original?! Now you know.
