Lucerne's charm
by call_me_rhia
Lucerne lies in the heart of Switzerland, on the shore of the Vierwaldstättersee, or else Lake of the Four Forest Cantons. In the middle age Lucerne was Switzerland's busiest market town - and today it the medieval character still remains. The old town has been closed to traffic and it's now a pedestrian area - medieval buildings cluster around small squares with fountains in their centre. Modern life comes in the shape of the numerous shops that line the little cobblestone lanes and streets. Generally speaking the buildings: each of them has its unique charm - a unique decoration, a unique iron-wrought sign. I also like the atmosphere: although touristic, it does not look artificial - there's very few places/bars/restaurants that one would call tourist-traps. For me Lucerne is Switzerland as its best.
Lucerne Tip
by inthegarden
On our first evening we went out in a garden area just outside of our hotel and looked up at the sun drenched mountain range. The city, the lake and the river below along with the mountains left a lasting imprint of this city in my mind. The next day we visited the farmers' makets along the river which helped add color to a dark and cloudy day.
Take a look at the Chapel...

Take a look at the Chapel Bridge. Constructed in the early 14th century, it was part of the city's fortifications. The paintings in the bridge were added in the 17th century, illustrating the scenes of Swiss and the local history.
Congress Centre
by sandysmith
The Congress centre adjacent to the train station and boat quai is always bustling with activity - day and night. Good place to sit outside at a table and people watch. The newish fountain adds an interesting element and is one of the ffew feature of the town lit up at night too - see night pics travelogue.
Christmas markets
by call_me_rhia
If you visit Lucerne in December you may find some really charming Christmas markets all over the city - and in particular along Loewenstrasse. There are plenty of tiny wooden huts that sell all sorts of things, and you can find some interesting and unusual Christmas presents, like for example raspberry wine and beautiful handmade candles. Even if you're not looking for anything to buy a stroll along the Christmas market is worthwhile: it's a true delight in terms of smells - especially because of the gluhwein - a spiced wine served warm... simply delicious!
