Take a cruise on the lake. It really brings out the natural beauty of Lucerne and makes you appreciate even more this wonderful country! Sitting at a cafe drinking hot chocolate and eating swiss chocolate (the feeling ill part afterwards I WON'T miss)
painted houses

The best thing about Lucerne is the Old Town: about seven city blocks brightly decorated with beautiful and old frescoes. You can find some of the best examples in three squares: Weinmarkt, Kornmarkt and Hirschenplatz. Definitely the houses in Hirschenplatz: a real jewel of 15th century architecture. Interesting buildings to see are also the Rathaus (Town Hall) and a guild-hall: the Zunfthaus zum Pfisten

See St Peters Church. I can't tell you anything about this church, other than it's name and the fact that it dominates the view in this part of town, with it's ancient stonework and splendid clock faces. Lovely.

Well, while we're on about bridges, you've got to see the Spreuer Bridge too. Only slightly younger than the Kapelle Bridge, this is also wooden and has painted gable panels. It's a little further downstream where the water is more channelled, and it rushes under in an absolute torrent!
The Alphorn
by keeweechic
The alphorn is a musical instrument once used by shepherds in the alps as a way of communicating. It has been around for some 500 years. It later developed into a musical instrument and has even appeared in works by Leopold Mozart and Brahms.
