Jailhotel Lowengraben is the first Jailhotel in Switzerland! Surely a unique hotel stay in central Lucerne - 5-10 mins from the staion. The old historic jail was closed in 1998 and is now a hotel you will be happy to be locked up in!You can have a converted cell double room from Sfr98 per room per night. Grander suites can be booked for Sfr200 (=135 euros) - such as the librarry, the Governors room and the visitors room if you want a bit more luxury and comfort!

We spent a night here on our way back home. Good central base, basic rooms (glorified hostel) but with private facilities and a decent buffet breakfast. Hard to complain for a city centre hotel really and a unique experience being locked up for a night.

Directions: From station, cross over Seebrucke Bridge. Turn left onto Grendelstrasse. At the end of the street, hang a left onto Grabenstrasse which becomes Lowengraben. The hotel is on the right.

Imprisoned?

Great unique place. A chance to stay in an actual prison, albeit, minus the criminals... :P

Was actually worried that there might be unrest spirits, but rest assured..

This is a converted prison for light criminals and is right-smacked in the city centre. Really unique as all the fixtures are still kept within, and boy, that includes all the locks, padlocks, latches on the inches-thick door as well as bars on the windows.

No fear tho, the amenities are great, with top-notched facilities..... erm... for budget-travellers standards, I mean.

And the best of all, you have to actually queue up with trays on hand, for meals.... :P how quaint could this be????

Be ware! Web site photos are misleading!This is Youth Hostel of the worst kind! And you have to pay more than 120 CHF per night (about 100 $). Rooms are awful, carpets and curtains are smelling, beds are uncomfortable, no protection from sunlight at all! They even have a room they call 'River-side Suite' which is all but a suite (imagine having to pass through another bedroom to reach the WC...). In case you have to use a shared WC, you have to share it with many, many people (mainly youths from overseas) and chances are it's not always that clean. As for the breakfast...it perfectly fits with all the above.

No wonder we did not manage to spend more than 1 night there...we should have judged from the looks of the building (probably the ugliest in this -marvelous- city)

P.S. Please note that this is NOT the ex-prison hotel! The latter is called 'Loewengraben'.
