Cycling daytrips in Lucerne

by Maiyon

I am thinking of heading back to Lucerne next July and having done a 5 day impromtu (!) cycle trip on rented bikes, with my partner, in Alsace, France earlier this year, I am keen to do a little cycling in Lucerne but on a day trip basis ie up early and back to the hostel by dark. Has anyone got any suggestions? Can you actually cycle round Lake Lucerne? Best place to hire a bike?? By the way we are middle aged so no desire to do alpine passes at this stage! We did 40 - 60kms per day in Alsace which was manageable for ageing limbs!

Can't help you on Lucerne but have you thought of the Loire Valley in France? They have a special Loire a velo program that is part of a process of building a bicycle route from Nantes to Budapest. The following web site will give you infor on various trips by theme and length. There is also rental information. http://www.loire-a-velo.fr/

Another helpful site (in English) is http://www.valdeloire.org/?SectionId=1&CHANGELANG=en

Just a thought. Enjoy your trip. We're in our 60s and still love to bike.

A good site for everything aobut cycling in Switzerland is:

http://www.veloland.ch/en/welcome.cfm

You'll find there info about routes, rental places etc...

Cycling around the lake is certainly possible. It is also possible to rent an electro-bike. If you do this you can use the battery-swap stations that have been established along some routes. Makes for very relaxed cycling.
A good place to rent bike from are the Railways, as you can rent your bike from one station, and drop it off at another one at the end of your ride, and return by train. The boats on lake Lucerne also transport bicycles, so you could just start out along the lake (a very nice ride !), and just take the boat back when you're tired.
Just spend some time on the Veloland site. It has a lot of info, not only about good routes, but also about roads to avoid, and how to bypass them using public transport...

The tour around the lake is 67 km long and would take you about 4 to 6 hours. And if you really feel k.o. before the end you can - as the previous poster suggested in his excellent answer - always take the ship.

The trip around the lake is really magnificent, with ever changing views. You will be delighted.

Thanks guys...and I suspect Kakapo is a fellow NZer - recognise the bird!!. The trip right round the Lake sounds great and a good tip to be able to drop cycles at another rail station and train back ... The velo site/france tips seem good for the future in terms of doing a several day tour whereas this time I just want ideas for day outings. Husband may now not get time off so will be on my own (for the first time but good to get out of one's comfort zone!!) I will have a Swiss Pass (have pass will travel!) so will have the ability to just jump on a train and go to any city for the day, hire a bike and be off ...... so any day cycle trips or great places to see away from the cities in other areas in Switz greatly appreciated.

See the Kapellbrucke(Chapel Bridge). The original bridge was built in 1333. It was Europe's oldest covered bridge and connected the two parts of the old town. In 1992,it was destroyed by a fire.It has since been fully restored.

The River Reuss

by b1bob

In both 1986 and 1987, when I visited Lucerne, it was abnormally hot. The River Reuss looked inviting, but the first time, when I took off my shoes and socks and dipped a toe in there, I wondered when the ice truck left. That'll give you a new outlook on life, friends and neighbours.

Visit the Hof Church.

by sheryl_tan

The church is the main cathedral and religious center for the city. It was destroyed by a fire in 1633, but was rebuilt again in 1645. It is the most important Renaissance church building in Switzerland.

conquer Mt Titlis, in the nearby village of Engelberg. Mt Titlis (the 2nd highest here in Switzerland) is a snow-covered 10,000 ft peak. For more details, scroll down to the 'Must See Activity' section (below). Alternatively, you may wish to scale the HIGHEST moountain here? It's the Jungfrau. Forget about Mt Pilatus. It's considered a HILL next to Mt Titlis or the Jungfrau! Really.
