Wooden bridge to Hurden

You could cross the Zürick lake thanks to a wooden bridge, which was rebuilt in 2001. It is an 841 meters wooden bridge only for pedestrians from Rapperswil to Hurden, a 30 minutes walk. This wooden bridge also happens to be the longest wooden bridge in Switzerland.

Rapperswil is located at the upper Lake Zürich. This town is characterized by historical old town with its catle,blooming rosebushes and varied cultural life. Rapperswil is also known as the Town of Roses.

"Stay as we explore Rapperswil on Zuricher See."

On Sunday October 8th my host Roger and I took the combination bus and train from Wil by Turgi to Schlieren, where Vt friend Rebibi and her husband Remo met us and we were driven south east along the west side of Zuricher See. The low clouds soon lifted and we crossed Lake Zurich to Rapperswil which was bathed in bright sunlight.

It was time to park the car and wander around the City of Roses and check out the Castle, the Church of St John and the the town itself, which were all built around 1200 A.D, when the von Rapperswil family moved from nearby but remote Altendorf to the east side of Zuricher See.

The move was precipitated by the fact that Altendorf was a remote location and the site atRapperswil allowed for a bettter defensive positon and control of the narrow isthmus of land that stretched across the Lake.

The imposition of Tolls could certainly improve the Financial situation of the von Rapperswil's .

"Explore the top on Mount Santis on a sunny day."

Mount Santis is a huge massif of a mountain, without high ground to the north it seems to rise out of the flat land by Lake Constance like a Mount Everest.

Santis at a height of just over 2500 m tends to be out of line with the rest of the Alps as they cut across Switzerland from South West to North East and on into Austria south of Feldkirch.

The actual visit to Mt Santis, especially the top is shown in my Appenzell Page, since there is no listing for mountains on VT.

I enjoyed the display of gnomes that I thought it would capture the essence of all of Switzerland.

No I don't mean that the Zurich gnomes are just out there to make money, I really refer to the many areas, the Cantons of Switzerland, that each one has a different feel or character.

From the rolling hills, the lakes to the high plateau then to the massive mountains and the narrow valleys. Each imparts a feeling or a taste to the land and each develops a people that make up this variety that is this Nation.
