sankt Gallen
by call_me_rhia
Sankt Gallen is the most important city of Eastern Switzerland - only it does not look like a city... it's often called the city of books, but by looking at it you'll see that it's more like a large village.
The city gets its name from an Irish monk, Gallus, who founded it in 612 AD. During the 8th and 9th century it became one of the great intellectual centers of Europe. Even today its university is supposed to be Switzerland's best university, especially for economics. The city of books and learning is my favourite for its old library (Stiftsbibliothek) which counts about 2,000 illuminated manuscripts from the Middle Ages... Amazing even if you are not a calligraphy bum like me.
As for the rest... the city is a major producer of linen and embroidered cotton fabric, which we call Sankt Gallen lace. Because of its centuries long tradition, this lace is truly peculiar. You can admire it cheaply... as in window-shopping.
Packing List

Having a folding umbrella at hand is not a bad idea. Film, batteries, and camera accessories are expensive everywhere in Europe. Buy these things in the U.S.
We were lucky to have borrowed a digital camera. We took over 100 pix and were able to erase the clunkers right on the spot.

St.Laurenzen-Kirche
by amsterdam_vallon
Apart from the cathedral, the reformed Evangilical Church of St.Lawrence is presently Sankt-Gallen's most famous church. It was established in the 9th century and regained its former prominence during the later part of the Middle Ages when it was designated as the church for the towns people. It clearly demonstrates the strict segregation according to faith within the town itself, wich was underscored further by the construction of a dividing wall.
The tower of the Church of St.Lawrence offers a magnificient view of the city within the Green Belt.

Sankt Gallen

"The city"
The city has only 70'000 habitants, but from all different nationalities. It's one of the biggest and most important cities in Switzerland. Their main language is German and it's a pretty religious city with historical background.
"What to do?"
It's a great place to go shopping...with small streets and cute houses/architecture.
It's also a great place to begin some nice walks, to the constance lake for example or small cities nearby.
The organisation and location for bike trips is very good!
There's a very old and famous library that is really worth seeing.
If you are doing a trip around Switzerland, it's a cute city to visit, but you can see everything in 2 - 3 days...on sundays nothing happens.
It's a good place to stay on winter, 'cause there are a lot of places around where you can go skying.
"Parties and Young People"
The parties are ok, 2 per week..mostly organised by the Management University. There aren't a lot of programs at night, but there's cinema (expensive), a lot of openairs in summer and some bars and restaurants....
There are many nice theater spectacles to be seen each season.
