Location
by ATXtraveler
Schaffhausen is located on the northern border of Switzerland and Germany, about halfway between Basel and the Austrian border. It is part of Canton Schaffhausen, and the nearest major city is likely Zurich to the south, about an hours drive. The city itself is about 5km south of the German border, and total travel time for us from Stuttgart was 1,5 hours at autobahn speeds (120-180km/hour).
You can expect a slight delay at the border, as Switzerland is not a member of the EU, so passage is not guarenteed between countries. You will have to stop for the border guards, however the guard we encountered did not ask for ID, just verified our purpose in entering, and asked where we would be going. He was excited to hear we came to visit Schaffhausen!
February in Schaffhausen
by ATXtraveler
Schaffhausen is definitely considered a winter destination in February. Although we had beautiful sunny weather on the day we were here, it was still very cold. The temperature was forecasted for 45 degrees fahrenheit, but I would be surprised if it was 30 at its high. Sarah and I were very cold in our fleece coats and gloves, and I would have preferred an overcoat. Pack warm, don't worry about layering, as the cold clothing will do you good the whole time in February!

Visit the old castle, in down town. Start seeing the live moose in the basements (I think they are still alive), the interior is amazing, all rock from fet to celling, you wil up in an spiral plane stair and at the top a wide view of the city, at the exit you go out trought the stair I show you in the picture between grapes. Nice place.
I love europeans olds castles
Schloss Laufen
by pure1942
In days gone by the castle standing proudly over the Rheinfalls was home to the Barons of Laufen but today is a complex houseing a restaurant, hotel, hostel and giftshop. The beautiful building looms over the falls giving the location such an picturesque quality. The best views of the falls are from the walls of the castle and down along the castle cliff (CHF 1 charge for the best views!)
However the castle itself is also worth a closer look especially its gate and inner courtyard gardens.
Wandering around town
by anytimeanywhere
Schaffhausen is a great town to wander in and look at the buildings and squares. The orante and impeccably maintained baroque style buildings are beautiful. Most of them were homes of nobility and/or guild houses when originally built.
