Hotel

I will spend a weekend in Zurich and have booked Ibis West. Is that a good location? In all reviews it says it's a but off and in the industrial part. which does not sound so fun. Is it a better location for Easyhotel?
Or any suggestion for hotel around 210CHF for a doubleroom for 2 nights

Any suggestion for great restaurants, pricey but not too expensive?

I was in Zurich the last weekend and stayed at the Crowne Plaza. A very trendy 4 star hotel. It cost me around 97 euros for a double room with breakfast. In case you decide for this option be sure that breakfast is included in the price otherwise it costs around 35 Swiss francs per peson. The location of this hotel is near the Zurich football stadium and well connected with a tram service. Just about 12/15 minutes by tram from the main station.
I booked my room through a spanish internet site - www.rumbo.es
The hotel link is the following

Ibis Zürich West is in an former industrial area that is being redevelopped. That means there is still some industry, but not as much as there used to be. There are offices, apartment blocks, lofts, restaurants, movie theatres etc. It's getting to be quite a trendy place in Zürich, but as the reconversion is still going on there are also quite a few building sites.

However, this being Switzerland everything is clean, well organized and safe. And pbulic transport connections with the rest of the town are good.

Closed railway station is Zürich Hardbrücke, which has trains to the airport. The best way to plan your trip is to use google maps, which even can plan trips using public transport in Switzerland.

Hello all,

I once stayed in the Ibis West on business combined with some time for private explorations of the city. If you got a good deal at the IBIS West I would recommend staying there. It is a bit out of the city centre, but as mentioned before, public transport is fantastic in Zurich.

You will have excellent train connections to both the airport and the main train station. Also there are a few tram and trolleybus lines which serve the area of the Technopark and you can even walk to the city centre (20-30 minutes).

You find more info about the IBIS West on my Zurich page.

I hope this helps

Travel Tips for Zürich

New Christmas lights as from 2005

by yumyum

Unfortunately, the old soft lights have gone. They were replaced by these CHF 20 million sterile lights that have nothing to do with Christmas at all. There is a big controvery about them. Well, decide for yourself what to think. Luckily, some side street still have the old lights which gives you more of a Christmas feeling.

The former church of the Zürich aristocratic ladies' guild was a gift from the German emperor Ludwig. The world-famous stained glass windows by Marc Chagall in the choir (1970) are particularly impressive.

National Holiday - bonfires and fireworks

by german_eagle

Most of the districts of the city have their own celebrations in the evening of National Holiday. Sonja and her mum took me to the one in Seebach (a 10 minutes walk from my hotel). As you can see on the pictures the bonfire was a success. And so was the "chilbi" in general! It was fun to watch the locals enjoying their private fireworks as well as the tombola, the stalls sold very good food (I had a delicious veal bratwurst, thanks Sonja, and rivella) at reasonable prices.

Halfway through the party a thunderstorm came up and everyone fled to the covered area with benches and tables. Everyone had a good time despite the weather (or because of the weather?) and I am really glad I visited!

Important note: All photos were taken by VT member yumyum, also known as Sonja ;-) Thanks a lot!

Stein am Rhein

by jorgec25

We visited this marvellous medieval town on a rainy afternoon, and were sad that we couldn't go back on the next day to visit everything in detail. But there was not enough time.

The main square of this town is one of the most beautiful I've ever seen. All around there are buildings richly ornamented.

Small side streets leave from the main square towards the river bank, making it a true pleasure to stroll around this lovely town. Even in the rain.

Truly a must visit.

Again, not exactly outside of Zurich, but I was making a road trip and Zurich was my next and final stop.
