Awesome location!
Well, I'm living so close to Zurich, that I never had to stay in a hostel or hotel in Zurich. But if I were a tourst, I'd stay here.
Unique Quality: The location is excellent. Right in the heart of the Old Town, about 10 minutes walk from the Main Station, 2 minutes to the next Tram Stop and just about 10 minutes walk to the lake. GREAT!

The City Backpacker-Hotel Biber
I have never been inside this backbacker as I had my own apartment. The reason why I picked this one to introduce is because of his great location in the Niederdorf. I think the prices are quite reasonable for Zurich

We sleeped in City Backpacker...
We sleeped in City Backpacker hostel.
Unique Quality: First you step in to this relatively small hostel from one narrow sidestreet of Niederdorfstrasse you think 'this can't be good at all...'. That's because of you have to climb up dirty and old stairs to get to the reception... When you find the reception it might be also closed if you happen to come in wrong time (reception isn't open between 12-15 afternoon). Reception works fine and staff is enthusiastic and smiling. Rooms are clean and there is also a kitchen on each floor. WC's and showers are common and not so clean all the time.

right in the heart of buzzing niederdorf
I recently stayed at the Biber and found it excellent. It's often full so it's better to make reservations in advance. In case you are stuck there's a second hostel, a HI, but it's located out in the suburbs. Address will follow soon.
Unique Quality: It's the city's backpacker's hostel at Niederdorfstrasse 5, in the old town, where the nightlife is. A really nice hostel, in the middle of everything, for 29 swiss francs a night in the dorms.

I want to travel from Zurich to Milan via the Gotthard Pass route. Prior to that I will be travelling from Paris to Geneva, and then Geneva to Zurich. And after Milan i'll travel to Rome.
Where (from which website) should I book the ticket from Zurich to Milan? And should I buy some kind of rail pass (I'm 21, so maybe i'd qualify for a reduced fare) or buy the tickets individually? I'm Australian, but at the moment I'm in Paris, which is where I intend to buy the tickets.
Thanks for any help

If you're in Paris at the moment than you should be able to buy all the tickets you need at one of the main Paris railway stations.

Buy it seperately, from Zurich to Chiasso on swiss train and from Chiasso to Milan on Italian train. It is the cheapest if you get cheap ticket on Swiss train. Sent you a message. Check your inbox here. Good luck!
Travel Tips for Zürich
Zürich Tip
by call_me_rhia
Attractions
Let's start with a list of the most famous tourist attractions. In Zürich there are three interesting churches to visit: Grossmünster, Fraumünster (with Chagal stained-glass windows) and St. Peter. Museumwise the two most important ones are the Kunsthaus and the Swiss National Museum. For architecure the best is to check out the old traditional corporation houses (Zunfthäusern) in the Niederdorf or the buildings both in the immediate proximity of the river Limmat.
Lake Zurich
by Toyin
Lake Zurich is between Zurich and Davos, its on the main highway out of Zurich to Davos. It is sorounded by snow covered mountains, a scene that gives it a spectacular view as you could see in this pics. The lake is used for various activities including sports, and as a medium of transportation.
A Wallace Fountain from Paris
by Nemorino
In the middle of Zürich there is a Wallace Fountain just like the ones in Paris, with explanatory plaques in several languages.
The explanation in English reads:
"Fountain from Paris, 1870, to initiate the 1982 World Convention of Water Experts in Zurich. The four nymphs personify simplicity, purity, sobriety and charity. They symbolize international co-operation in providing people everywhere with pure and salubrious water."
These fountains were named after the English philanthropist and art collector Sir Richard Wallace (1818-1890), who donated them to the city of Paris in 1871 and 1872 (not 1870 as it says on the plaque) to provide safe drinking water for the people of Paris after the city’s public water supply had been destroyed during the Franco-Prussian war of 1870-1871 and the uprising of the Paris Commune.
Dolder Sports Complex
by Nemorino

Not far from the upper station of the Dolderbahn is a large sports complex, including the Dolder Ice Skating Rink, which they claim is the largest artificial ice skating rink in Europe.
It was built in 1930 and has an area of roughly six thousand square meters.
The sports complex also includes an outdoor swimming pool and a mini golf range.
Botanical Garden
by yumyum
I consider the Botanical Garden off beaten track as it is not the usual tourist site. But if you are in Zürich longer then it could be a possibility to visit this place. There are 3 greenhouses with the themes savannah, subtropical and tropical. They are open all year round (in winter till 4 pm). Entry is free of charge. In the warmer seasons the gardens are also used as park for relaxing or eating a sandwich for lunch.
BTW, there is a cafeteria but it is only open Monday to Friday.
On trolleybus no. 33 there is a stop "Botanischer Garten" or alternatively take tram no. 2 or 4 to "Höschgasse" and walk up.
Q:Have Schengen visa- Can I travel to Zurich from Germany? "Hi,
My husband & I are Indian nationals(Having Indian Passport) residing in US. We are in Germany on Schengen Visa. He is on..."
A: "Switzerland is also part of the Schengen agreement. If you have a Schengen visa, it's good for the whole area and you can cross the border to Switzerland or any other..."
