The Good, the Bad and the Ugly
Major mistake - read the TripAdvisor reviews AFTER making a booking! Online "best rate" booking so no refund option... Thought the rate was quite good given that it was an "Intercontinental" (IC) i.e. the flagship of the group. I have stayed at IC hotels in US, Montreal, Toronto etc. in the past and have always been impressed. So didn't expect any unpleasant surprises.
Not this time! The hotel looks quite run down generally - although Zurich is "old world", this hotel just looked old. I was booked into a noisy room with twin beds, overlooking the tram line on the main street (Badener), despite requesting a quiet room with a double bed. Room carpets were in poor condition (frayed/worn), furniture looked stained and worn and the heating/cooling controls didn't seem to work properly.
Not often that I can say that an airline seat was more comfortable than a hotel bed! Okay, it was a business class airline seat, but still better than this bed after a 12 hour flight... The soft, spongy mattress left me with a pulled back muscle and having to pop ibuprofen pain pills for the next 3 days in Zurich (an extra 10 Swiss francs which could have been spent on a better hotel!).
Well, I did not suffer in silence. I did complain, and was told that there were no other rooms available. After much protest, a room "became" available on the other side of the hotel! Quieter, but still with an uncomfortable (fortunately double) bed. Not a great room, still worn, frayed for an IC hotel and in need of an extreme makeover.
Some positives - the (tiny) television worked okay and the shower pressure was good. Although run down, everything was relatively clean (though I suspect that even 1-star hotels in Switzerland are clean). Breakfast was also adequate (thought the breakfast restaurant has a gloomy rundown feel to it - not a prison breakfast but not cosy or smart either). Staff attitude varied from polite to friendly. Also, the hotel is just a few tram stops away from the center of town (15 minute trip). The 1 block walk to the tram stop can be unpleasant with ice and snow in the middle of winter though. The distance to central Zurich is not a trainsmash unless you want to be in the heart of the action.
All in all, spend the extra 50 bucks on another proper 4-star hotel, and don't be fooled that the Intercontinental brand guarantees you a certain level of comfort. It's a mistake I won't make again!
I too, have stayed in many Intercontinental Hotels, throughout Europe. Therefore assuming that the IC in Zurich would be "up to par" with the rest of the IC's. Big mistake. Upon check-in, we were overwhelmed with the stench of stale cigarette smoke and cigars. The lobby was dimly lit and we waited for quite some time before anyone appeared at the front desk. For the record, we were the ONLY ones in the lobby waiting for an attendant. Getting off the elevator to go to our room was another disappointment. Dingy, dark (lightbulbs missing) and a very old, musty smell. Then came the room. Old, worn, torn, ORANGE carpet, a torn vinyl chair and a bedspread with stains and tears on the bottom. To get to the window, we had to walk sideways by the bed as there wasn't any walking room. Then came the bathroom. Toilet did not flush, light bulbs were missing and the shower had mold in it. Immediately went back to the lobby to request another room. Was given another room, however the only difference was that the toilet flushed. Same furniture and same condition of the carpet, furniture and beddings. I slept in my clothes. Not a plesant experience. Find another hotel if you are staying in Zurich.
Not As Bad As The Reviews...
We stayed here for just one night, free using Priority Club points (so that does color my comments...) At check-in, was upgraded because of my Priority Club platinum status, to a nice room. Front Desk staff very polite, very efficent, helped explain the Trams to us (Tram stop is 5 minutes walk from hotel, then 10-15 minutes to town, depending on where you are going. An enjoyable ride.) Room was very clean, Bed was very hard. Only ate breakfast at hotel. They had buffet only, expensive, but OK. At check out, Front Desk arranged shuttle back to airport. They were always helpful. Bottom line: This is an OK hotel if you can get a competitive rate. It is what it is, and it's not that bad...
Find somewhere else to stay in Zurich
I stayed at the hotel on a business trip and was dissappointed. The service was lacking, the rooms need to be renovationed, the location is poor if you are looking to do any sight-seeing, and the in-room internet service didn't work. If you are a sight-seer or business traveler, you will probably be let down. After walking around Zurich, I realized there were a lot of other choices in my price range that would have been much better, and more convenient This was the worst Intercontinental i have ever stayed at.
This was one of the worst hotels we have ever stayed in! Beginning from valeting our car, when the 1 and ONLY bellboy took 5 minutes to actually decide to come outside and help us unload our heavy luggage after simply glaring at us for quite some time. Then, instead of helping us unload the suitcases, he had the nerve to answer his personal cellphone! As we proceeded to check-in, we were greeted by the most apathetic, bored, and unethusiastic receptionist we have ever come across. Instead of her greeting us and saying a simple "Welcome", we had to be the ones to initiate the conversation. Then, we were extremely disappointed with our rooms, but decided to stay since we would only be there 1 night. The rooms were so small (smaller than traditional European rooms) that I felt as if I was in one of those tiny, cramped rooms on a cruise ship. They were also very poorly kept, with stains on the carpet, chairs, and sides of the bed. The chair for the desk was so filthy that we could not even stand to sit on it! The next morning, the breakfast was okay, but not good enough to make up for the rest of the hotel's major problems. The location of the hotel is the absolute worst! It is not close to ANY tourist attractions or any interesting places to see. It is simply in the middle of a boring residential area. You have to take the bus (for 10 min.)..which can be quite pricey for roundtrip tickets for a whole family. Please do yourself a favor and stay somewhere else..you'd be better off paying half the price for a smaller, cheaper hotel in the center of the city.
Check in and fast and easy. Room was very comfortable and quiet. The A/C worked great. I slept like a baby. Took the shuttle the next morning at 6:30am and got to the airport at 6:45am. Had free coffee and juice available in the lobby for early birds. Came to Zurich by train and took the #3 tram which got me within 2 blocks of the hotel. The hotel was up to the usual intercontinental high standards.
Good value for money
I have stayed at this hotel a number of times, out of choice. Each time getting a good deal via an early booking through priority club.
Considering the Swiss total obsession with money we were very impressed with the quality of the breakfast (inclusive)...horrendously overpriced if not inclusive!
It has to be said that the hotel restaurant is excellent, both in quality of food and price (the buffet) and the rooms are clean and comfortable.
Yes, the hotel can be understaffed, but the rates are ridiculously cheap for an Intercontinental, so not surprising that it doesnt match the I.C in Vienna!
Stop whingeing you lot of unhappy travellers...you get what you pay for!
Hotel is basically a motel. The room I got was in serious need of renovation. Too small, broken basin, old TV, Charges for an internet machine. If you have your own laptop, they charge for the connection, and finally they charge for the (un)-courtesy bus.
The hotel is far from the center of town. After complaining to the management they admitted that the branding was creating some confusion and offered me a partial refund. I did not accept it, as it was nowhere near covering the annoyance of being taken for a loop.
