Budget accommodation in perfect location
As we booked the hotel we didn't know it's a gay/gay friendly hotel, but don't let it make you turn back. The staff was friendly and everyone was respected equally.
The hotel is one of the few places offering rooms at this low price in the middle of Zürich old town. We did not need tram, taxi or bus in the city at once. Everything was within the walking distance.
In the main building there is the hotel, but they have a little bit cheaper rooms just a few minute's walk away in another building which is quiet and nice. (Spitalgasse 3). That is where we stayed. These budget rooms have shared toilette, but own shower, sink, good beds, big TV, minibar, sofa/couch, linen, towels, soaps, chair and a table plus a shrink for clothes. Rooms are clean and they are cleaned daily.
If you take the Spitalgasse's cheaper rooms (away from the main hotel and its several gay bars that might be noisy), you first have to register in the main place. Then you walk just a few minutes to your building. When you leave, you do your check out again in the main hotel.
The only thing that irritated me on Friday and Saturday evenings was the noice that came from outside (not hotel guests). Namely the old town's "party street" Niederdorfstrasse passes by the hotel and young people get really noisy late at night.
Unique Quality: Great location - all sights within walking distance.
Minibar, which we also used as own fridge.
Quiet hotel (despite the street noise).
Budget priced rooms. You can save hundreds of euros if you don't take some big normally priced chain hotel.

Weird but nice
We stayed here both coming into Switzerland and when we left again. We had two different rooms and they are decorated in the weirdest styles you can imagine, which adds to the charm I think. A bit noisy in location, but nice and central

Hotel Goldenes schwert
Is this a good hotel for a 2 nights stay for a family. How can I get to the Rhine falls from here? What else can we do in this time besides the Bahnofstrasse and Rhine falls (no museums, please). I have to take an international flight at 0700 hrs, so will have to leave the hotel by atleast 0330 hrs. Which is the best way to reach the airport at that hour?

The hotel looks OK to me. In Switzerland you can always expect the hotel to be clean and efficient.
To get to the Rhinefalls (or anywhere else in Switzerland for that matter) just go to the main railway station, which is just a short walk (or two tram stops) away. From there trains go everywhere. Sww www.sbb.ch for the schedule. For the Rhine falls you need to get to the "Schloss Laufen am Rheinfall" station. Tickets you can just get at the station, or from a ticket vending machine.
Getting to the airport that early may be a problem. But do you really need to leave that early? Zürich airport isn't that big, and being an hour in advance is usually enough. But if you really have to leave that early you'll have to take a taxi.

The reviews on tripadvisor say that this hotel is next to a night club and very noisy at night. So, I looked around and found "Hotel Alexander guesthouse" with an online booking rate of 200 chf. Pls. let me know if I can risk an online booking - many hotels seem to overbook or cancel bookings even a day before arrival. Has a VTer stayed here?

I've used online booking a lot, and without trouble. But if you're hesitant to book online just call the hotel. They will be able to help you in English.
