The Hotel Arlette is reasonably-priced for Zurich (a very expensive city) and is in a really excellent location, on a fairly quiet street less than 5 minutes on foot from the Hauptbahnhof (for airport trains as well as trains to everywhere else) and just a couple of minutes from the historical centre of the city, trams and buses.
The hotel is small and family-run. Everything is super-clean and staff are not only friendly and courteous but also speak good English. My single room was on the fifth floor, but the lift, although only having room for 2 people, is very speedy. So I walked down the stairs but took the lift up.
My bed was comfortable (extra pillow provided on request), the room pleasantly warm on some particularly chilly nights and the window opened to allow in fresh air. There was a minibar (which I did not use) and a reassuringly-solid room safe, as well as ample storage space. The hot water was always hot, the shower comfortably spacious and the bathroom itself as clean as everywhere else in the hotel.
Wifi is free and worked very efficiently for me. There is also a computer and printer for guest use and if you (like me) have forgotten your plug adaptor (Swiss plugs are not the usual 2-pin type found on the European mainland) then staff can lend you one.
Breakfast was simple but filling, although pretty much the same every day: orange juice and good coffee (or tea, Indian or fruit) served at the table, with a croissant and several types of bread roll (and rye bread slices on some days) and butter, cream cheese and preserves to put on the bread. Some hot breakfast dishes (boiled egg, scrambled egg etc) can be cooked to order at an extra charge.
I was very comfortable at the Arlette and highly recommend it for a not-too-expensive, centrally-located Zurich hotel. I booked through www.booking.com
Directions: From the Hauptbahnhof walk across the bridge and take the second left along Stampfenbachstrasse. The hotel is on the right.
Zurich is not a cheap place to visit and I found accommodation prices expensive. On our one night stay in the city we opted to stay at the Arlette beim Hauptbahnhof because it was cheaper than average and just a short walk from the main train station.
We stayed in 5 different hotels on our 7 night trip to Switzerland and this was my least favourite hotel. There wasn't anything major wrong with it, the décor was just a bit dated and our air conditioning was broken. My main complaint however was the constant sound of running water from the pipes in the bathroom. The pipes had towels wrapped around them to try and muffle the sound and to soak up the moisture from the pipes (the towels were damp to touch).
Unique Quality: That said, there was a wall mounted TV, a mini bar, and the inclusive breakfast was basic but fresh. I probably wouldn't stay at the Arlette beim Hauptbahnhof again, though it was in a convenient location and seemed to be good value for Zurich.
We paid CHF 175 for a double room and CHF 135 for a single (July 2008)
