3 hours in Zurich...
by iblatt
Hello,
We will have 3 free hours in Zurich airport and would like to go into the city for a quick taste. We'll be traveling with my 80 year old mother-in-law, so we're thinking of getting a taxi from the airport to somewhere nice and also central in Zurich, have an easy 1 hour stroll and then have lunch and a drink somewhere with a nice view.
- Any suggestions are welcome!!
- How long is the taxi ride from the airport to the city center, and how much should it cost?
Many thanks,
Ilan

I really doubt that you have enough time for what you have planned. Personally I would just stay at the airport and play it safe.

Me too: if you must try, I recommend you skip the walk, or at least leave it till after lunch when you will know exactly how much time you have left; unless perhaps your calculation of 3 free hrs still leaves ample time for your return to the airport and at least 1 hr for a) finding the right part of the airport for your departure (I spent quite some time doing that on my last trip!), b) going through passport control and security etc. Note also, if you do take the train, that it can be a good 10-15-minute hike to and from the station, through a shopping centre (station is below it). I think the taxi was a better idea, especially as you could get it to drive by the lake so you can have a look, or better yet, use it to get to a restaurant with a view of the lake, e.g. http://www.sonnenberg-zh.ch/index2.html.
None of the restaurants I went to in the city itself had much a view, apart from a café by the Limmat, the name of which I forget.

three hours is far too less time to explore zurich.the boat ride is great, but i doubt if the time will be enough.i would just stay at the airport.there is a tschibo shop at the airport which is good to shop.apart from this there are many other shops where you can spend some time
Travel Tips for Zürich
So many sights to see!
by bugalugs
The River Limmat divides Zurich city before flowing into the Lake of Zurich. It is a very compact area for sightseeing. On the east in the Neiderdorf area is the Grossmunster, cobbled streets, cafes, restaurants, hotels and clubs. A very busy area in the evening. On the west is the Bahnhofstrasse with its elegant shops, St. Peters with its huge clock face and the Fraumunster.
Coop Grocery store

Just a tip to all travellers to buy from there. It is relatively cheap and very convenient to downtown. A great place to buy a picnic lunch and then head out to the promenade at the lake or the big park behind the Landesmuseum.
Coffee complete - where's the coffee?
by lobopequeno
Should you get invited for a "Kaffee komplett" or "Cafe fertig" be prepared not to drive anymore!
The "coffee" can vary between some hot coffee water (that's at least what it looks like!) or a regular coffe - but always mixed with some heavy-%-Obstler as I learnt.
The Obstler/Obstwaesserli can come in the tastes Williams Birne or also Zwetschge.
I had my problems downing this huge cup of hot booze-water-mix......and felt quite funny for the rest of the eve. Cheers.
