Zurich by night
by HORSCHECK
Many buildings, churches and bridges of Zurich are beautifully illuminated at night.
Among them are the main train station with the Alfred Escher monument, the Romanesque Grossmuenster Church, the Fraumuenster Church and St. Peter's Church.
Apart from that a night stroll along the river Limmat in the Old Town offers great views of the lit-up bridges.

What is clearly evedent in Zurich is that for first timer, you can hardly miss your direction with a map. The roads are not in networks, because of the mountains, and there are clear and explicit sign posts like this in the pics.
The City Saints: Felix and Regula and Exuperantius
by Kathrin_E
Zürich's local saints are Felix and Regula. Brother and sister were members of the Thebaic Legion under Mauritius, a Roman military unit which consisted of only Christians and was thus persecuted. After the defeat of the Legion in the year 302 they escaped to Turicum/Zürich where they were beheaded by the Roman governor together with their servant Exuperantius (who actually should be the third martyr and saint but is rarely mentioned because he was just a servant).
The legend tells that the three beheaded carried their heads to the place where they wanted to be buried. Above the graves, the Grossmünster was built. The location of their execution is situated right on the river bank - in this spot the Wasserkirche ("water church") was built more or less into the river.
Their holiday is September 11. The city of Zürich later introduced the Zürcher Knabenschießen, a shooting competition and public holiday, on the weekend before or after this date.
With the reformation the cult of the saints ended. Their relics were brought to the catholic church in Andermatt, which still keeps the heads of the saints. The other relics returned to Zürich when the catholic church of St Felix and Regula was completed in 1950.
Scenes from the legend of Felix and Regula are depicted in the frescoes by Paul Bodmer in the Fraumünster cloister.

Hans Waldmann lived 1435-89 and was Zürich's most famous mayor. At the young age of 22 he became master of the guild and member of the city council. He was one of the successful leaders in the Burgundy wars (1474-77) and became mayor in 1483. In 1489 he was beheaded - the farmers didn't approve his reforms. Those old times ...
The bronze statue was created by Hermann Haller in 1937 and is to find next to the Fraumünster church by the Münster bridge.
