More about Hotel St. Josef
Great value, very pleasant stay
by TripAdvisor Member OldKeys
Thanks to recommendations on TripAdvisor, we stayed at this hotel for two nights and we'd be very happy to return and stay a bit longer. We were in a studio which had a small well-equipped kitchenette, and a lovely view of trees and a courtyard from the windows. It was quiet, clean, safe, nicely decorated. It was near all the sites and main shoppiing areas, and not a long walk from the railway station. Perfect for vegetarians (thank you to the other member who mentioned that staff can recommend a good veggie restaurant - they do, it's Tibits - very nice!).
Decent basic hotel
by TripAdvisor Member g&z
We had a good stay at the hotel. It's pretty basic, but the rooms are nice, clean and spacious. And the reception staff are fantastic -- very friendly and helpful.
The location is within walking distance of the Zurich Hauptbahnhof, and it's absolutely perfect for exploring the Altstadt which is right on the hotel's doorstep!
Our only gripe is that the housekeeping was a bit erratic. We often found that cups/glasses had not been cleaned, teas had not been replenished, etc, etc. But the reception staff were always happy to make amends as soon as any problem was reported!
The breakfast is ok... It consists of the usual Swiss/continental fare of breads, pastries, meats, cheeses and hardboiled eggs.
So if you're looking for a decent, cheap hotel in central Zurich, then St Josef is a very good option.
Good Hotel

Good location - 10 min walk from Bahnhof, COOP, Bahnhofstrasse. Quiet surroundings.
I stayed in the annexe building - based on the recommendations from friends here in Trip Advisor and I agree that the room indeed is spacious and bright .. I also had a kitchenette in the room .. :)
The room has no aircond nor fan but during my stay the weather was quite cold (15 degree celcius on the average) so i have no problem with the heat .. afterall windows are not locked .. open it for better ventilation
Overall.. I'm happy with my stay here ..
Excellent Value Hotel: Highly Recommended

Our stay at the St. Josef encompassed four nights during a brief visit to Zurich to see in the New Year. Firstly, the hotel's location is ideal, being very close to both the city centre and the railway station yet on a relatively quiet, largely residential street, elevated above busier roads that serve the city centre. If you arrive in Zurich by rail and are able to carry your luggage up a fairly steep flight of steps I would conclude your journey on foot.
The St. Josef is not luxurious and has a somewhat utilitarian ambience throughout. However, rooms are surprisingly spacious. Ours contained a table as well as a wardrobe and chests of drawers without feeling remotely cluttered. Our accommodation also included an en-suite that had a powerful modern shower housed in a large glass unit. My only criticism is that the bed was rather hard and took a little getting used to. The room was serviced daily and always to a pristine standard.
The breakfast room is far larger than some I have encountered in much bigger and more prestigious hotels I have stayed in while visiting the south of France. We never had any difficulty in finding a table, no matter what time we arrived. The range of food to choose from is vast and was frequently replenished by polite and attentive waiting staff. In fact, all the members of staff we spoke to were extremely courteous and helpful throughout our stay.
The hotel offers guests an airport shuttle service which we used on the day of departure. The very reasonable fee is paid to the hotel in advance so any anxieties about the cost of the journey are precluded. It is certainly worth taking advantage of this service if staying at the St. Josef. All in all, there is very little to fault about this hotel. Aside from the rather austere interiors and the hard bed the St. Josef has a great deal to commend it.
Good location and breakfast
by TripAdvisor Member Jan_from_Atlanta
We were here three nights in June and it was warm so not having air conditioning was a bit of a challenge. Otherwise, this small hotel has a good location about a 10 minute walk from the rail station and very near restaurants. Zurich was a good place to base our brief stay and we really enjoyed a day in Lucerne taking the boat, cog train, gondola excursion to Mt. Pilatus. We thought the food in Swiitzerland was not good and everything was pricey so bring plenty of money!
Great place close to centre
by TripAdvisor Member XBlanka
This hotel offers a great combination of both - place and price. It is very close to the centre but quiet enough to have a good sleep. And the price is also nice (for Zurich). We paid for double room with shower and WC 195 CHF (without WC and shower is 145 CHF). Delicious breakfast is included. And the hotel is really safe! You can also rent a parking place at the hotel`s backyard for 15 CHF per day.
clean, lovely staff, lovely rooms!
by TripAdvisor Member canfly
This hotel is a real gem. It offers amazing value for its price. It is clean, with modern rooms, and good facilities. It offers a nice selection of continental breakfast, with the price the room. It is very close to both the old town, city centre and the amazing Kunsthaus for all art lovers.
The staff are all very friendly and attentive. the only peeve is I am a wheelchair user and to get to the hotel, you need to go up a big slope as its on a hill, next to a vernacular railway! I wish we knew this in advance, but inside the disabled room was excellent.
Nice small hotel close to but not IN the center of town

The Pension St. Josef is about a 15 minute walk, or 5 minute cab ride from the Zurich train station. Located on a hill the Pension is a small, family-friendly hotel which provides convenient access to the city, without being IN the city. The hotel serves breakfast and has a small restaurant offering dinner Mon-Fri. Rooms were comfortable wtih decent sized bathrooms. Amenities are minimal but satisfactory. Breakfast is wonderful with plenty of offerings - something for everyone. Staff is friendly and helpful. There is some street noise from a large street below the hotel, so ask for a room towards the back of the hotel. We had a double room and a large family room (adequate for a family of 5 with a cot). Rooms were good value for the money.
Great little find
by TripAdvisor Member sm8587
This was a great little find! Decent room with large, modern bathroom. We had been to London and Paris before arriving in Zurich....If I were to judge cities by their bathrooms, Zurich wins hands down!
This hotel has an elevator, a blessing in European hotels!
Not far from the train station, if you have good directions to hotel you will come to a hillside stairway. If you are toting luggage, instead you can walk further up on the sidewalk to the next walkway up. It is paved and easy to bring suitcase up. The hotel is a less than a quarter of a block to the left.
The reception staff speak English and helpful.
I really loved Zurich.
Reminder: If you are hungry for dinner and at the train station, there are plenty of places to buy food but most Swiss restaurants will serve dinner around 7 pm. You can only get snacks up til then.
Stores are closed on Sunday, if you need anything, shop at train station shops located downstairs.
