Good food in Zurich
by briggscass
Stroll from the Bahnhofstrasse along the river, passing Fraumuenster and Grossmuenster, all the way down to the lake, and explore the strips of parkland surrounding the lake. The people and the food. I highly recommend fresh-that-day chocolate from Merkur (from the train station, headed towards the lake, it is one of the first shops on your left on the Bahnhofstrasse).
For fondue there are many good places, but particularly Le Dezalay, which also has other excellent Vaudois specialties. Die Blindekuh is a "blind" eating experience that is quite educational (and delicious). Le Cedre is very very good Lebanese food. Another favorite is Frascati, an Italian place practically on the water on the Eastern shore of the lake. It's a great place to have lunch or a drink and watch the sun glisten off the water.

On the left handside of the lake there is Bellevue square, on which the Opernhaus, the Opera is located. Every spring, Zürich's central festive green area (white in winter) is the scene of Sechseläuten, where the traditional 'Böög' (a symbolic effigy of winter) is burnt as a means of banishing the chilly season. Other large events, such as annual performances by the Knie national circus, are also held here.
Züri Fäscht (Zurich party)
by yumyum
This weekend event takes place every 3 years on the first July weekend. It starts Friday at 5 pm and finishes on Sunday night. The city center is closed to traffic and public transport. There are always lots of market and mainly food and drink stalls. Also there are open-air stages with concerts and discos.
On the lake there are attractions like high divers, acrobatic water skiing. In the sky there are usually several acrobatic air shows. There are several funfair areas with crazy rides or rides for kids and there is also always the biggest ferris wheel in Switzerland.
The major highlight is the firework on Saturday evening. Along the lake promenade there are loudspeakers installed in order to listen to the music during the firework. On Saturday it's pop music and on Friday classical music. If the weather permits it, the classical concert is live, they were playing on a large pontoon. If you want a good spot where you can sit down, you need to be there at least 2 hours in advance. The fireworks usually start at 10.30 pm.
