Terrible but cheap

Not very nicest place to be but if you dont have any choice this place is good. The place feels like an orphanage. The walls are whitewashed, the bathrooms look like they are straight out of a public high school, and the rooms are as cramped as possible. All this for nearly twice as much as any other european hostel. The crowd is a strange mix of young asian travelers, families, elderly people, and a minority of european backpackers. If your funds are low, Zurich will kill you as well. A McDonald's salad is over £ 3. It is a definately beautiful though.

Unique Quality: The only quality is cheap place to spend the night in expensive Zurich.

Zurich caters to all needs of accommodation.

Check out www.zurichtourism.ch

it answers most of your questions and it comes in English as well and it converts prices into major currencies.

Plus it's accurate since it's online!

Unique Quality: There's also a Youth hostel though not in town but if you travel on a bugdet it certainly makes a big difference, ideal for youngsters, the young-at-heart, families and groups. It serves good, simple food and is only 10 minutes away from the lake and 20 minutes from the main station. Breakfast buffet available from 6am.

Youth Hostel (Jugendherberge IYHF).
It's inexpensive, but of high quality.

I've stayed in Bern, Zurich and Schaffhausen youth hostel. They are of different prices.

Zurich: double room, 41 CHF per head

Bern: double room, 37 CHF per head

Schaffhausen: single room, 29 CHF It is not necessarily to share the dorms with the strangers in youth hostel! I stayed in a room for my trip. Last time I stayed in Zurich youth hostel, I was given a four-bed room with bathroom but we had only 2 persons!
What you may not like is 'self-service'. You need to queue and get your food, and then clean the table. For some hostels you are given the bed sheets and you need to tidy your bed.
There is some entertainment, e.g. internet, snooker, but you have to pay.
In general, the environment and relaxing and tidy. You can't expect 5-star service for the inexpensive price, of course.

Youth Hostel Zurich

I'm going to be in Zurich September 28,29,and 30. Me and my buddy are staying at the Youthhostel Zurich (I know, not a very creative name). Anybody have any info on it. Also, is it worth a jaunt down to the Lindt factory. It is my favorite chocolate in the world.

i stayed there once and found it very fine.

only negative thing is that it's a little out of the center.

Hi

I stayed there once and it was nice. They charged 98 CHF for single room, not sure what are their charges now. I wish you nice trip!

The YH is a long way out of the city (20-25 min by tram 7, plus walk/bus 33 to the tram). They are nice, clean, modern, and a bit boring - but you are there for Zürich I assume, not for the YH...

Thanks to all of you! I knew it was a little out of the center, but money is the key. It was a lot cheaper than the other places we were looking at, so I just wnated to make sure they were well managed. With hostels you get some scary ones. We're staying at Bob's in Amsterdam, and I know that one has a bit of a reputation, but it's Amsterdam, so it'll be time to party a bit.

most hostels around the world are well run, but amsterdam just attract all the worst trash among tourists because of the dope smoking scene and the hostels there will always be affected by that.

the one is zurich is very well run and professional.

Yeah, that's kind of what I figured. Amsterdam is on the travel list of every college frat boy over here, so the hostel culture is gauranteed to be diferent there. All the other hostels we are going to seem to be the kinds of places where people go just to meet other people form different cultures and hang out somewhere new. By the way, I love the phrase "biking viking". too too cool.
