Ideas for a family present?
Has anyone any tips about a present for a family (2 adults, 3 kids around teen age) near to Zug?

What sort of present were you thinking of? A trip somewhere? A restaurant meal? or just a Swissish present?
Is the family actually Swiss? Or are they Expats. How do you know them? It is very hard to offer suggestions without more guidance.

Try game or puzzle set, sometimes there are available as souvenir type gifts with the name of the place you are visiting stamp-on.
In Malaysia, there is a traditional game set called the "Congkak" and it is available as gift set. Trust every country may offer something similar. In the US, Cracker Barrels sell puzzle sets that are rather interesting.

I was thinking more of a day out sort of present - something they can all enjoy. They are friends of mine who have lived out there for about 16 months (originally from England).

If its not too expensive for you, give them a hiking weekend (with you as guide?), with a summit hotel voucher either on Rigi, Pilatus or Fronalpstock - all of these mountain hotels are quite near to Zug.
They can reach the summit either on foot or by cable car. On the following day, they could do a family hike from the top.

When do you intend for their day out to take place? And what kind of budget do you have in mind? Any other requirements/desires would also be helpful to know.
Also, do you know what sort of things they regularly do? So we can avoid giving them something they have already done, or may not enjoy. Or, that we can purposely cater to their hobbies...

Was trying not to spend more than £100, which isn't easy as Switzerland seems to be quite expensive. I was hoping to get something they can enjoy as a family, ideally (but it's too expensive) hot air ballooning, or a classic train journey, something like that, nothing too energetic (like the hiking suggested earlier) but that would be suitable for kids who are teen and pre-teen. I've looked on the Swiss Tourist Board pages and there were one or two possibilities there, but nothing has yet 'grabbed' me as being ideal, hence the reason for asking in the first place - I thought maybe someone would have an idea that isn't so well known but is a fab experience. All ideas gratefully received.

Combine it with a trip on Lake Zug and a Pic Nic on the lake or go to the zoo in Goldau at the other end of the lake (kids love it since they can touch and feed deer and goats)

Sorry I didn't get back sooner... have been ignoring VirtualTourist for a week or so.
I think that possibly a day (4 hours) out at Alpamare could be a good idea. Alpamare is a water park relatively close to Zug, just over the hill on the lake of Zürich.
Alpamare has thermal pools for simple relaxing (and massage and other wellness facilities) for the parents, and numerous waterslides and attractions which defitiely entertain kids of all ages (and myself, ahem).
You can actually buy the tickets on the internet on their English website! The price for the whole family would come to about your £100 suggestion.
The great thing, is that even of they have been, a relaxing time at the pools (or wild fun on waterslides) is always welcome.
