Leukerbad in canton Valais
"Thermal baths what better way to relax"
Nestled in the Gemmi Mountain Range in the canton of Valais Leukerbad is a perfect place to relax after a day of skiing, hiking or just lazing around. We choose this place to spend a week because of its easy access through one of the the newest 34.6km tunnel opened in December 2007 and at the moment one of the longest rail tunnel in Switzerland and the third-longest in the world. This tunnel has cut the time of travel by one hour and connects the canton of Bern to Valais.
It is the largest spa and wellness centre in Switzerland, and 3.9 million litres of hot water (up to 51 degrees C) flow daily out of 65 thermal springs..
The charm of the Gemmi pass has already cast its spell over personalities such as Mark Twain, Jules Verne and Pablo Picasso.
"Panorama from the Gemmibahn"
The most spectacular view was taking the cable lift from Leukerbad up to the 2350 meters high Gemmi. On a clear day the most famous mountains like Mischabelgruppe, Monte Rosa, Weisshorn, Matterhorn) and the Bern Alps come into view.
"Enjoying a walk along Römerweg Leukerbad - Inden"
From Leukerbad in 45 minutes you are in Birchen, where you can enjoy a well deserved drink or meal.
