Travel Tips for Samnaun

Skiing in one of the best resorts of the alps

The International Ski Arena Samnaun-Ischgl is one of the biggest skiing areas in the Alps.

Some part of the area is on swiss ground some on austrian. So while skiing you cross the border several times.

Totaly 42 modern lifts (Mostly chairlits with 4, 6 or 8 seats) take you up to the pistes very quick. Up to now the longes time i've ever waited was about 10 minutes, normaly its max 2-3 minutes.

The pistes are prepared very good. Where it is necessary they make their own snow with snow canons (specialy on the austrian side). There are pistes for every skier, from the easy blue ones up to some very spectacular and very steep black runs. There are a few ski-routes too wich are secured against avelanches but are not prepared. Next the obvious skiing gear you need to have your passport or ID with you as you ski in switzerland and austria and cross the border. Normaly there are no controls, but sometimes they do punctual checks.

My extremely short first stay in Switzerland

Samnaun was the only chance for me to visit Switzerland in summer 2004. Normally it had not been possible because I held only a Schengen visa with multiple entries. It was good to visit most of Europe, from Iceland to Greece and from Finland to Portugal. Only Switzerland was off limits for me. It is strange, this country is together with Liechtenstein completely surrounded by "Schengen" countries and Switzerland has already negotiations to join the Schengen agreement, too. But since the road from Austria enters the duty free area of Samnaun without passing a Swiss customs checkpoint I could enter it. The Swiss checkpoint is some km further upstream at the river Inn in Martina. And the Austrians only checked whether I am authorized to enter the Schengen area when I came back from there. I did all this only because my friend Lothar, living less than one hour drive from there took this short sidetrip from the way over the Reschen pass in order to fill up the car with the cheaper duty free fuel there.
