i suggest you ask your friends or bar tender/ restuarant hostess to call you a taxi and write you a price on slip of paper. there are pleanty of taxi companies which will take you to the place you need for a fixed price.

Monument to Kyj, Shchek and...
by Kostyantyn
Monument to Kyj, Shchek and Khoryv and their syster Lybid -- the legendary founders of Kyiv.
The monument was unveiled in 1982 at the foot of Pechersky plateau on the bank of the Dnipro. It depicts the legendary founders of Kyiv -- the brothers Kyj, Shchek and Khoryv and their sister Lybid. The sculpture is a boat with the three brothers standing in the stern, two are holding spears and Kyj holds a large bow. Lybid stands tall and strong in the bow, the wind is gracefully liftingher cloak.
Monument is created by Vasily Borodai along with architect N. Feschenko.

A fond memory..I was in the PODEL(Jewish Quarter) of KIEV...and a young boy...maybe 7 years old scampered up to me with a gym bag..full of 'something or other'..he motioned me to look inside and I could immediately see there were ALOt of war medals...I asked him,,,'how much?'..he didnt speak English but he held up 3 fingers and said 'sree',,,DONE DEAL!..;.he gave me the bag and bolted...LATER I opened the gym bag in my hotel room and there was over 100 medals...big/small/red/gold/silver...of every possible shape and kind...I sold 3 in Budapest...and gave Peter one he said was so rare he had never seen one like it...I still have most of them..90+ medals.
A nation of culture
by Bobek
Ukrainians and Russians tend to value all kinds of cultural events very high. But this is not restricted to serious classical or traditional themes. The range spans from opera, ballet, rock and folklore concerts to experimental drama, professional puppet theatre, improvisation, comedy and more.
I also noticed that Ukrainians and Russians are very well read in serious literature and even take interest in original versions of foreign literature if they only slightly know the language.
With this tip I focus on theatrical and musical arts only. This is not a closed list but will be complemented whenever I find a new clue and can give a brief description.

Moments in history
by Bobek
Many of us have been witnesses of the awareness of the people of Kiev (and Ukraine) sensing there is one more change to come after the declaration of independence of Ukraine in 1991 and the fall of the former USSR. On 22 Nov 2004, in an act of civil disobedience students of the Shevchenko University in Kiev stood up for integrity in the voting process after there had been evidence that the presidential elections had been massively manipulated. More and more citizens joined in.

History of Kiev (1)
by socrates_07
The History of Kiev:
Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, is one of the oldest cities of Eastern Europe.
The oldest human trances on the territory of Kiev date from the late Paleolithic period. Traces of Neolithic Trypilian culture settlements are numerous, as are those of the Iron and Bronze ages. Excavated Roman coins and burial grounds of the 2nd-4th centuries AD show that Kiev was already a large settlement and important trading locus at that time.
According to the Rus Primary Chronicle, the founders of Kiev were the brother's tribe, and the city was named after the eldest, Kyi. The memory of the other two brothers has been preserved in the names of the hills --Shchekavytsia and Khorevytsia - and in the names of the early 6th century, and in 1982 its 1,500th anniversary was officially celebrated.
During the reign of Vladimir the Great, Kiev consisted of two parts - the fortified Upper City, and Podil, the lower part. In the upper part of the city lived the prince and his retainers - the boyars and the prince's bodyguard. Podil was inhabited by artisans, fishermen and merchants.
At this time the construction of brick buildings decorated with wall painting and mosaics was begun in Kiev. During the reign of Yaroslav the Wise three gates led to the city; the remains of only one of them, the brick Golden Gates, have come down to us.
Considerable progress was noted in the development of Ruculture the center of which was Kiev. It was during this period that the first schools and rich citizens:
original literature appeared; the composition of chronicles began. During the 11-12th cc. Remarkable models of ancient architecture were created in Kiev, mostly churches and monasteries.
