Domestic Air Travel in Ukraine

by Wyodude

During My first trip to Kiev Ukraine in March I plan on flying to Luhansk for a couple of days. Are there any travel tips for someone who doesn't speak Ukraine or Russian when negotiating Ukraine airports? Thank you.

Re: Domestic Air Travel in Ukraine

I'm assuming your 1st trip to Ukraine. Thgeres no negotiating airfare. You can fly out of either aitport in Kiev. If your at Borispol (KBP) then go from there.

Autolux at the airport may have bus that you can take,, or you can travel to train station.. take a train.

Remmber the dollar = 8hg now. apprx. to traveling inner city,, $3/5 dollar. Depend on how far you want to go. The frist offer in a taxie.. try to get it lower, by knowing the appx distance. Even if you end up paying $5, that not bad.

I do alot of walking when I'm in Ukraine. Kiev has subway sys,, so getting around is eaiser.

If you fly domesticaly in the Ukraine.. they will weight your bags,, if over you pay extra for the weight.

Remmber these people only speak Russian, perhaps some will speak Eng.. or some eng. Try buying a train ticket.. these ladies speak no eng at all. hey will underatnd some eng.

Travel Tips for Kiev

Dnipro River

by georeiser

Dnipro River is one of the major rivers in Europe with a total length of 2285 km. It flows from Russia through Belarus and Ukraine before it ends in the Black Sea. The river passes through the city of Kiev, and is so wide that large vessels can access the ports in the city. The sandbanks of the river are used as recreation areas and beaches.

Varenichnaya Restaurant

Well once again it was so nice after knowing some lovely friends over 5 years through VT that I actually got to meet them here in Kiev. It was a pleasure meeting Anna_only and Anna aka Dialing where we went to this lovely restaurant and then on to Route 66 for Pool and table football :-) UKraine vs England..! haha

Confusion on the Metro

by Bobek

For your orientation on the Kiev metro lines it is advantagous to make yourself familiar with the general setup and naming conventions of east European subway systems. Details can be found under

"Confusion on the Metro" in the transportation tips category.

Sophia's Square and St.Michael's Square

by hunterV

Visiting these two squares is also considered a must for visitors of Kiev.
You can see this impressive monument in front of the state reserve called "Sophia's Cathedral" ("Lord's Wisdom Cathedral").
This is the monument to Bohdan Khmelnitsky, the Ukrainian Cossacks' leader in then middle of the 17th century. His Cossacks army was the first European force to defeat the mighty and snobbish Polish army in 1648.
The great Polish Kingdom could not recover from that defeat for dozens of years, although the Polish army continued fighting the Cossacks' army.
Standing at the foot of this monument dedicated in 1888 you can take a look of St.Michael Square and then walk towards it.
Archangel St.Michael is the patron saint of the Ukrainian capital.
He is represented on the city's coat-of-arms.

Monument to Bohdan Khmelnystky

by Klod5

The monument to Bohdan Khmelnystky is, on frent of St.-Sophia cathedral, on Sofiyska square. I didn't understand anything to what the guide, in Russian, about Bohdan Khmelnystky, explained. I fear to have mixed his explanations with those about the Prince Yaroslav the Wise, whose relic rests in a sarcophagus of marble in the cathedral.
I will review my lessons of history before throwing me in some explanation !
